Tips for Passengers Requiring Special Assistance on Aer Lingus

You must always book special assistance in advance to avoid having to wait at the airport.

General Tips 

  • Contact the ground staff for assistance with pre-boarding and check-in procedures. 
  • Passengers with the following disabilities and mobility-related problems may be required to travel with a travel companion for safety reasons:
  • Severe mental disabilities that prevent a passenger from understanding or applying safety instructions.
  • Passengers who are blind and deaf and unable to communicate with the crew as a result. 
  • Passengers with a motor-based disability that could prevent them from evacuating.
  • Most paraplegics. 
  • Passengers may need to present a Medical Information sheet (MEDIF) filled out by their attending physician under certain medical conditions or circumstances (explained in the sub-section below).
  • Passengers must reach the airport by the recommended arrival time so that they can receive the assistance they need without having to rush.
  • Passengers with reduced mobility can carry their mobility devices free of cost, subject to limitations (see below).

  • If you require wheelchair assistance at the airport:
    • Inform Aer Lingus at least 48 hours in advance if you didn’t at the time of booking by calling (USA/Canada) or +353-1-886-2009 (Ireland). If calling from another country, call the Aer Lingus Reservations Office in that region.
    • You can avail of the service free of charge.
  • If you’re traveling with your own wheelchair:
    • Submit the Special Assistance Request Form to request support at the departure and arrival airports no later than 48 hours before departure, or call Aer Lingus for more information.
    • Have the following information ready as you will be required to provide it in the form:
      • Device make and model
      • Dimensions 
      • Weight
      • Battery type 
      • Battery wattage
    • You can carry your wheelchair free of charge in the cabin or check it in at the counter or departure gate. 
    • Both motorized and manual wheelchairs are accepted. 
    • Wheelchairs with wet-cell batteries are not permitted as carry-on baggage or checked baggage, nor are spare wet-cell batteries allowed on the aircraft.
    • The wheelchairs must be capable of being disassembled into parts not exceeding 264lb/120kg each.
    • Passengers will be seated as close to the toilets as possible.
    • The Airbus A330 series are equipped with on-board wheelchairs, but the A320 series is not. 
    • Aircraft restrooms are not wheelchair accessible, but the aisle chairs provide access to the restroom entrance.

  • Passengers traveling with adult/child harnesses
    • Aer Lingus does not provide harnesses but allows you to use certain types of harnesses. 
    • Submit the Special Assistance Request Form no later than 48 hours before departure. Be sure to mention the make, model, and other details requested in the form. 
    • AMSAFE CARES harnesses are allowed if used with the aircraft seat belt. 
    • AMSAFE CARES or Crelling harnesses are not allowed to be used in the Business Class cabin for safety reasons. 
    • Crelling harnesses can be used only in Economy Class cabins as follows:
      • Children up to 5 years of age—Crelling 27I 
      • Children between 5 – 8 years—Crelling 27A 
      • Children between 9 years to adults—Crelling 27B 
    • For safety reasons, harnesses are only allowed on last-row seats, i.e., seats that don’t have seats behind them. 
    • Child restraint device requirements
      • Children who are 24 months or older may use passenger seatbelts alone—but not children below 24 months of age.
      • Children who are below 24 months may use an infant loop belt—but not children who are older than 24 months.
      • Car-type safety belts can only be used by children between 6 – 36 months—but not by children in any other age group. 
      • Amsafe Cares harnesses can be used by children between 12 months – under 5 years of age. However, in exceptional cases, children and other passengers may be accommodated, subject to advance authorization from the Irish Aviation Authority by applying to specialassistance@aerlingus.com.
  • Passengers requiring vision assistance
  • Submit the Special Assistance Request Form no later than 48 hours before departure. 
  • Select a seat online at the time of booking or later by calling Aer Lingus before the travel date.
  • Inform the ticket counter agent that you need help to reach the gate or with check in and/or pre-boarding procedures. 
  • After reaching the airport, request the airport staff for escort assistance through the terminal, and later to pre-board and disembark the aircraft. 
  • The cabin crew will provide individual safety briefings on demand as well as any other assistance required during the flight. 
  • Passengers requiring hearing assistance 
  • Submit the Special Assistance Request Form no later than 48 hours before departure. 
  • Inform the ticket counter agent that you need help to reach the gate or with check in and/or pre-boarding procedures. 
  • Keep an eye on airport monitors for check-in, boarding time, and boarding gate information. 
  • At the airport, switch the hearing aid to ‘T’ where the signage indicates that induction loops are in use. This will reduce the background noise and make the announcements more audible. 
  • After reaching the airport, request the airport staff for escort assistance through the terminal, and later to pre-board and disembark the aircraft. 
  • Individual safety briefings will be provided on demand, and the safety information cards can be viewed via this link.
  • Hearing aids can be used on the aircraft. 
  • Occupying an emergency exit row seat is not permitted.
  • Passengers traveling with a recognized assistance dog
  • Includes guide dogs and other assistance dogs. 
  • Submit the Special Assistance Request Form no later than 48 hours before departure. 
  • Restricted dog breeds will not be accepted in the cabin or hold. They include:
    • Aggressive breeds such as Tosa, Rottweiler, Pit Bull Terrier, Mastiff, Fila Brazillero, Argentino, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull, and Akita. 
    • Brachycephalic/snub-nosed dogs due to their inability to adapt to flying conditions. They include boxers, bulldogs, and pugs
  • Must meet all government and quarantine regulations.

  • Passengers traveling with carers 
    • Submit the Special Assistance Request Form no later than 48 hours before departure. 
    • Passengers are typically required to travel with a carer if they are unable to:
      • Use the aircraft seat in an upright position when required.
      • Use the toilet without help.
      • Eat without assistance.
      • Administer medical procedures and/or medicines without any assistance.
    • Aer Lingus will inform the passenger within 5 working days if it feels that the passenger must be accompanied by a carer. 
  • Passengers with learning difficulties 
    • Submit the Special Assistance Request Form no later than 48 hours before departure. 
    • Contact the special assistance department for more information.
    • Alert a crewmember after reaching the airport.
  • Passengers traveling with children and individuals with autism

  • Pregnant passengers 
    • Submit the Special Assistance Request Form no later than 48 hours before departure—regardless of where you’re flying.
    • For flights within Europe
      • Can travel up to week #27 without any special requirements. 
      • Between weeks 28 – 35
        • The Expectant Mother Travel Advice Form must be filled out by a doctor.
        • The form must be submitted via the special assistance request form or faxed to 00-353-1-886-6868. 
      • Cannot travel upon/after reaching week #36.
    • For transatlantic flights 
      • Can travel up to week #27 without any special requirements. 
      • Between weeks 28 – 33
        • The Expectant Mother Travel Advice Form must be filled out by a doctor.
        • The form must be submitted via the special assistance request form or faxed to 00-353-1-886-6868. 
        • Passengers flying out of North America should contact special assistance for travel clearance.
      • Cannot travel upon/after reaching week #34.

    • Other things to remember:
      • The above-mentioned conditions may not apply to codeshare partners, so check with them. 
      • Always check the destination country’s specific requirements from their local diplomatic office. 
  • Passengers requiring medical clearance
    • Passengers requiring oxygen 
      • Includes asthmatic passengers requiring oxygen, incl. those whose condition has worsened in the last 48 hours.
      • Contact the special assistance department at least 48 hours before departure. 
      • Subject to a fee of EUR 150/USD 180 per flight at the time of booking.
      • Oxygen supplies by Aer Lingus are request-based, and only 1 request can be accommodated per flight. 
      • Aer Lingus can provide 2/4 liters per minute continuously or intermittently, but Airbus A321-neo and Boeing 757 flights can only accommodate 2 liters/minute.
      • Requests for 4 liters continuously or intermittently cannot be accommodated on flights between Dublin and San Francisco, Bucharest, Bourgas, Athens, the Canary Islands.
      • Aer Lingus does not supply oxygen in the Business Class cabin of transatlantic A330/A321-neo/B757 aircraft. However, this facility is available in the Economy Cabin of these aircraft.
      • Passengers are not allowed to use their own oxygen on Aer Lingus. However, approved Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs) are permitted.

    • Passengers with tetraplegia/quadriplegia
      • Can only travel after receiving medical clearance. 
      • Contact Aer Lingus for assistance. 
    • Passengers with infectious diseases
      • Can only travel after receiving medical clearance.

    • Passengers awaiting or receiving transplant treatment 
      • Can only travel after receiving medical clearance. 
      • Contact the special assistance department to reduce the time required to gain clearance and fly when you need to.
    • Passengers with broken lower limbs
      • Can only travel after receiving medical clearance due to the possible risk of deep vein thrombosis. 
      • Contact the special assistance department at least 48 hours before departure. 
    • Passengers with psychiatric disorders
      • Can only travel after receiving medical clearance. 
      • Contact the special assistance department at least 48 hours before departure. 
    • Passengers with recent illnesses
      • Examples include a recent illness, accident, operation, or heart attack/stroke in the last one month.
      • Can only travel after receiving medical clearance.

    • Passengers traveling with premature infants
      • Applies to premature infants, i.e., infants born at least 3 weeks before their normal delivery date—all the way up to the age of 6 months + the number of days born prematurely.

  • Passengers with special dietary needs
    • Passengers can place a special meal request:

  • Passengers traveling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs) and Other Medical Equipment
    • The following devices that comply with FAA regulations are accepted in the cabin:  
  • Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs) 
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Machines (CPAPs)
  • Respirators
  • Ventilators
  • Nebulizers
  • POCs and the other devices mentioned above can only be used in the Economy Class cabin—not in the Business Class cabin.
  • Defibrillators and devices with in-built or attached standalone humidifiers cannot be used.
  • If traveling with a non-approved assistive device incl. POC, the passenger must provide additional data for approval. 
  • Fill out the medical information form (along with the device information) and send it to the special assistance department at least 48 hours before departure.
  • Battery requirements 
  • Onboard supply of power is not provided. Passengers traveling with medical equipment must carry sufficient batteries and ensure that they are fully charged and able to run the device for at least 150% of the maximum expected flight duration. 
  • Each spare battery should be prevented from short-circuits.
  • Devices with wet-cell batteries will not be accepted.
  • Spare lithium batteries: 
  • Are only allowed as carry-on items. 
  • Must be adequately protected, with the terminals securely taped to prevent any chances of short-circuiting. 
  • If carrying a device such as a defibrillator with a lithium metal battery, the battery must be removed. 
  • If carrying a defibrillator in a checked bag, inform Special Assistance in advance.

How to Make a Group Booking Online

How Can I Change My Booking on Aer Lingus

You can change/modify a booking on Aer Lingus by phone or online. To change your booking by phone, just call or your local office, provide your ticket details (e-ticket number/booking reference number and name), and a travel expert will make the required changes. 

There’s only pre-condition to changing your flight booking online—you should have purchased your ticket directly from Aer Lingus. To change your flight booking online, go AerLingus.com, click on the Manage Trip tab, and enter your flight details (i.e., booking reference number and family name). Now select the flight booking that shows up, i.e., the one you want to modify, and make whatever changes you want by following the on-screen prompts.
