Ethiopian Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Policy

According to Ethiopian Airlines Unaccompanied Minor policy, children between 5 – 11 years (included) can travel alone on direct domestic and international flights after booking the Unaccompanied Minor service. A Company Escort (cabin crew) is optional on non-codeshare flights but mandatory on codeshare flights (for an additional fee). 

For children between 12 and 17 years, the Unaccompanied Minor service is optional, i.e., they can travel alone or book the service and travel as Unaccompanied Minors after paying the applicable fee. 

Age Restrictions on Ethiopian Airlines

The following age restrictions apply for minors on Ethiopian Airlines flights:

• Children below 5 years of age will not be accepted if they are traveling alone. They must be accompanied by an adult passenger.
• Children between 5 – 11 years of age are allowed to travel alone on domestic and international flights after paying an Unaccompanied Minors Service fee.
  • An Escort can be provided at an additional charge to accompany the child throughout the trip. The escort will look after the child during the trip and hand her/him over to the authorized person at the destination airport (including if a part of the trip is operated by a different airline). 
  • The Escort service is optional for direct flights but mandatory for codeshare flights.
• For children between 12 – 17 years, the Unaccompanied Minor service is optional. However, it is mandatory if they are travelling internationally on codeshare flights. 

Note. The Unaccompanied Minor service is not offered for flights connecting to/from another airline. If an Unaccompanied Minor’s flight connects to another airline, the parent/authorized legal guardian must make the necessary arrangements. 

How to Book the Unaccompanied Minor Service on Ethiopian Airlines

Before purchasing a ticket for your child, you must: 

• Contact Ethiopian Airlines at +
  (or the local office in your city/country or your travel agent) 
• Request for the Unaccompanied Minor Form
• Fill out the form
  When filling out the form, be sure to provide the complete information about the person/persons who will be responsible for your child at the departing airport, transfer points, and arrival airport. 
• Submit the form

Note. If you’re unable to arrange for a person to receive your child at a transfer point and you have not requested an Escort service, Ethiopian Airlines can help make arrangements, provided your child is at least 12 years or older.

About Ethiopian Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Form

When filling out the Ethiopian Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Form, you (i.e., the parent or legal adult guardian of the minor) will need to provide 2 signed copies with the following information at the check-in counter (when checking in for the flight):

• Full name, age, and sex of the minor 
• Languages spoken by the minor
• Permanent address and phone number of the minor
• Flight details of all flights on the minor’s itinerary
• The name, address, and phone number of:
  • The person seeing off the minor at the departure airport
  • The person meeting and seeing off the minor at the stopover point (if applicable)
  • The person meeting the minor upon arrival

Unaccompanied Minor Fees and Escort Charges

International Routes—Non-Codeshare Flights

If your flight is operated by Ethiopian Airlines, the Unaccompanied Minor fees and Escort charges will be as follows:

• For children between 5 – 11 years of age
  • If you do not request the Escort service, you must pay:
    • An Unaccompanied Minor fee (per-way/per-child) of:
      • USD 100 (to/from Africa/Middle East)
      • USD 125 (to/from Europe)
      • USD 150 (to/from Asia)
      • USD 175 to/from North/Latin America)
        plus
    • The full adult airfare 
  • If you book the Escort service (Company Escort), you will be charged:
    • An Unaccompanied Minor fee (per-way/per-child) of:
      • USD 100 (to/from Africa/Middle East)
      • USD 125 (to/from Europe)
      • USD 150 (to/from Asia)
      • USD 175 to/from North/Latin America)
        plus
    • The full adult airfare, plus 
    • A one-way adult airfare for the Escort, plus a Service Charge
• For children between 12 – 17 years of age
  • If you do not request the Escort service, you must pay the full adult airfare.
  • If you request the Unaccompanied Minor service, you must pay the full adult airfare plus the Unaccompanied Minor service fee (as above). 
  • If you request the Escort service, you must pay the full adult airfare for the Unaccompanied Minor plus a one-way adult airfare for the Escort. 

On international codeshare flights operated in part by another airline, the fees will be as follows:

• For children between 5 – 11 years of age, you must pay:
  • An Unaccompanied Minor fee (per-way/per-child) of:
    • USD 100 (to/from Africa/Middle East)
    • USD 125 (to/from Europe)
    • USD 150 (to/from Asia)
    • USD 175 to/from North/Latin America)
      plus
  • The full adult fare, plus 
  • A one-way adult airfare for the Escort service (mandatory) plus a Service Charge
• For children between 12 – 17 years of age, you must pay:
  • The full adult airfare, plus 
  • An Unaccompanied Minor fee (per-way/per-child) of:
    • USD 100 (to/from Africa/Middle East)
    • USD 125 (to/from Europe)
    • USD 150 (to/from Asia)
    • USD 175 to/from North/Latin America)
      plus
  • A one-way adult airfare for the Escort service (optional/payable only if you book)

Domestic Flights

On domestic flights within Ethiopia, the fees for Unaccompanied Minors are as follows:

• For children between 5 – 11 years, you must pay:
  • ETB 500 as Unaccompanied Minor fee per sector, plus 
  • The applicable child fare, plus 
  • The one-way adult airfare for the Escort plus a Service Charge
• For children between 12 – 17 years, you must pay
  • ETB 500 as Unaccompanied Minor fee per sector, plus 
  • The full adult airfare
