Avianca Airlines Check-in Policy

You can check in for an Avianca Airlines flight in several ways:

1. Web check-in
2. Mobile app check-in (Android, iOS, Huawei)
3. Self-service kiosk check-in
4. Airport counter check-in

Avianca Airlines Check-in Times

Avianca Airlines recommends that you reach the airport at least 3 hours before departure for an international flight, 2 hours before departure for a domestic flight within Colombia, and 90 minutes before departure for a local flight within Ecuador. 

Exception. If you’ve already checked in for your flight online and are travelling without checked baggage, you can reach the airport up to 2 hours before departure for an international flight, and up to 1 hour before departure for a domestic flight.

Counter closing times. Avianca’s check-in counters close 60 minutes for departure for international flights, 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights within Colombia, and 35 minutes before departure for local flights within Ecuador. Boarding gates close 15 minutes before departure for all flights.

Avianca Airlines Web Check-in

Web check-in time. Web check-in (i.e., online check-in) is available from 24 hours to 3 hours before departure for most Avianca Airlines flights.

When checking in online, you can also:

• Select or change your seat 
• Select which passengers you want to check-in
  (if your booking contains multiple passengers)
• Purchase extra baggage 
• Update your contact details/passenger information
• Add your flyer number 
• Email your passport details to a mail of your choice
• Enter the information for immigration authorities
• Pay for add-on services 

Avianca Airlines’ online check-in functionality

To check-in online through Avianca Airlines’ website, follow the steps below:

1. Go to Avianca.com
2. Select the tab marked Online Check-in 
3. To access your flight booking, enter your:
   1. Reservation code
   2. Last name 
   3. Flight departure date 

…and click on the Continue button 

4. Follow the on-screen prompts to check in for your flight 

You will receive your mobile boarding pass on your registered email ID. You can download it and make a printout or show it on your smartphone at the airport.  

Notes

• The deadline for collecting the online boarding pass is 3 hours before departure.

• You must check in your luggage and be at the boarding gate within the minimum check-in time, which varies by airport. 
• Online check-in is not available for: 

• More than 9 people on a single booking. 
• Itineraries include more than 2 connections between origin and destination.
• Codeshare routes. 
• Connections with other airlines (you can only check in online for Avianca flights).
• Passengers requiring special services, such as:
  • Unaccompanied Minors service
  • Disability-related services (wheelchair, etc.)
  • Those travelling with pets in the cabin 
  • Passengers travelling with POCs or portable dialysis equipment
  • Deportee passengers
• Passengers travelling with paper tickets.
• Passengers who have to make additional payments.
• Passengers travelling with firearms.
• If you’re unable to or can’t check in online, use a self-service kiosk at the airport or check in at an airport counter up to 3 hours before departure for international flights and 2 hours before departure for domestic flights within Colombia.

Mobile check-in time. You can check in with Avianca’s mobile app from 24 hours to 3 hours before departure for most flights.

Avianca’s mobile check-in services are available for all flights except:

  • New York – Newark Liberty International Airport

After you check in with the mobile app, your mobile boarding pass will show up on your smartphone’s screen. You don’t need to print it—simply show it at the airport to go through.

• Your itinerary includes more than 2 connections between origin and destination.
• You’re travelling on a codeshare flight. 
• If you’re checking in for a connecting flight with another airline.
• You require special services at the airport or on the flight, such as:

You can check in at an airport self-service kiosk within your check-in deadline (normally up to 3 hours before departure) for most flights.

How to check in?

Find a kiosk near Avianca’s counters and follow the steps below:

1. Access the kiosk 
2. Acknowledge the dangerous goods information 
3. Select and enter an identification method from the options
4. Confirm the passenger name/names
5. Choose your seat 
6. Enter the required contact information in case of an emergency 
7. Enter the number of bags you’re carrying 
8. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your check in. After you check in, you can opt to receive a printout of your boarding pass. 

Note

• If you’ve already downloaded your boarding pass via web check-in, you can receive a printout by scanning the code. 
• You can also check in for a return/connecting flight if it is within the next 16 hours. 

How to print your Bag Tags?

To print your Bag Tags: 

1. Select the Baggage to check option. 
2. Choose the number of Bag Tags with the + button.
   Note. You’re allowed up to 2 per passenger. If you’re carrying more, go to Avianca’s check-in counter.
3. Click on the Continue button. 

You will receive a printout of your Bag Tags.

After receiving a printout of your Bag Tags: 

• Stick them to your luggage
• Retain a receipt
• Proceed to the baggage drop-off counter

At the baggage drop-off counter located near the kiosk: 

• Scan your passport’s QR code
• Bring the reader close to the barcode on your bag tag
• After reading the barcode, the machine will check in your bag

How to Get Your Bag Tags Online 

To get your bag tags online:

1. Go to Avianca.com 
2. Click on the Online Check-in tab
3. Access your flight booking as follows:
   1. Enter your reservation code, last name, and flight departure date
   2. Click on the Continue button
4. In the Boarding Pass section:
   1. Select the Baggage Tag option
   2. Click on the Print option to receive a printout immediately or
      Send it to your e-mail address to make a printout later
      (Use a laser printer and good quality white letter-sized paper)

Notes 

• Fold your baggage tags correctly by following the instructions.
• Place the baggage tag in the label holder provided to you at the airport (you can use it for other flights also) and drop your labelled bags in the baggage module at the airport.
• Print and retain the receipts containing the ID number of your tags to help track your baggage.

Check-in Tips for Passengers Traveling with Children and Infants

• If you’re travelling with an infant, remember that: 
• All infants must have their own tickets.
• The infant’s ticket must be associated to your booking. 
• If you’re checking in with a child between 2 and 11 years old, you must have an adult passenger’s details associated with the child’s booking.

Check-in Tips for Passengers Travelling with Baggage

• If you have baggage to check, go to the airport’s baggage drop-off module. 
• If you have a connecting flight, your luggage will be checked in up to your final destination if all the flights in your itinerary are registered on the same ticket. If not, you will have to collect your luggage and check it in again for your next flight. 
• Before your journey, go through the baggage policy of each airline you’ll be flying with.
