WestJet Airlines has relaxed its cancellation policies due to the COVID-19 pandemic and destination-specific advisories. Check out the cancellation policies and rules below to see which one applies in your case.
If your travel plans are affected by COVID-19, the following cancellation rules will apply:
If your flight is affected by a travel advisory—such as airport closure, bad weather, or non-COVID-19-related outbreaks—you have the following options until normal flight operations resume:
You’re allowed to cancel a flight within 24 hours of booking without paying any cancellation fee, as long as you book your flight at least 24 hours before departure. However, if you book a flight that departs within 24 hours, the normal cancellation rules and fees will apply.
Basic fares cannot be cancelled after 24 hours of booking and do not qualify for any Travel Credit. Other fares may be subject to a cancellation fee, depending on the fare type.
BusinessFlex and PremiumFlex fares can be cancelled for no fee on all routes, and domestic EconoFlex fares (within Canada) can be cancelled for no fee.
Note. The cancellation fees apply per person and per direction, except on flights from/to Europe where the cancellation fee is charged per person and transaction.
Note. The cancellation fee waiver will be solely at WestJet’s discretion and subject to your providing valid proof. For details or assistance, call WestJet customer service number.
WestJet does not permit the cancellation of Basic tickets outside of the 24-hour window, i.e., Basic fare tickets can only be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, provided the purchase was made at least 24 hours before departure.
After the 24-hour window, Econo tickets can only be cancelled for a fee, depending on your route and whether you cancel 60 days before departure or within 60 days of departure. For cancellation fees, refer to the section titled WestJet Cancellation Fees.
Econo Flex tickets can be cancelled free of charge for domestic flights within Canada, regardless of when you cancel. On all other routes, a cancellation fee will apply, depending on whether you cancel more than 60 days before departure or within 60 days of departure. For cancellation fees, refer to the section titled WestJet Cancellation Fees.
Premium tickets can only be cancelled for a fee, but PremiumFlex tickets can be cancelled for no fee. The cancellation fee on a standard Premium ticket will depend on your route and when you cancel—more than 60 days before departure or within 60 days of departure. Refer to the section titled WestJet Cancellation Fees for exact details.
Business tickets (except BusinessFlex tickets) are subject to a cancellation fee, depending on your route and when you cancel. BusinessFlex tickets can be cancelled for no fee. For cancellation fees on standard Business tickets, refer to the section titled WestJet Cancellation Fees.
WestJet’s award program is different from the award programs offered by other airlines. Instead of earning and redeeming miles, you’re offered rebates through which funds are deposited into your WestJet Travel Bank whenever you fly. You can later redeem these funds for future flights.
For example, you might earn $100 which gets deposited into your Travel Bank instead of 1,000 award miles, which you can redeem to get $100 off on your next flight.
The cancellation fee for award tickets will depend on the type of ticket you’ve purchased through your Travel Bank funds, your flight route, and the time of departure.
The cancellation fee charged by WestJet will depend on what type of ticket you’ve purchased, the fare conditions of your ticket, and when you cancel—subject to the following cancellation rules:
