Iberia Airlines baggage policy states that:

  1. The maximum combined dimensions (Length + Width + Height) of a single piece of checked baggage must not exceed 158cm/62in (incl. wheels, strap, and pockets).
  2. The weight of a single checked bag item must not exceed 50lb/23kg but you can check in up to 70lb/32kg by paying an overweight fee. 
  3. The number of baggage pieces you can carry free of charge will depend on your fare class and destination. 
  4. Additional baggage pieces and excess weight (50lb/23kg to 70lb/32kg) will incur additional charges.
  5. Purchasing baggage in advance is up to 50% cheaper than the airport rates. 
  6. When traveling with excess baggage, reach the airport at least 20 minutes before the recommended time.

– Per Iberia Airlines’ carry-on baggage policy:

Exceptions
Business Plus passengers departing from the United States are permitted to carry only 1 cabin bag/handbag and 1 personal accessory.

Passengers traveling on Vueling-operated IB5XXX flights can carry only 1 baggage piece on board, provided it does not exceed 55 x 40 x 20cm size and 22lb/10kg in weight.

Per Iberia Airlines checked baggage policy:

  • Bags exceeding 70lb/32kg must be repacked or they will not be accepted.
  • Bags weighing between 50lb/23kg and 70lb/32kg will be accepted but will incur an additional fee.
  • The maximum combined dimensions (L + W + H) must not exceed 158cm per bag, incl. handles, pockets, and wheels.
  • The free checked baggage allowance on Iberia flights is determined by your travel class and route.
  • Babies and children traveling on discounted fares are entitled to the same baggage allowance as an accompanying adult—plus a baby seat free of charge. 
  • If you pay your checked baggage fee in advance (online when booking, after booking, or when checking in online), you will get a discount of up to 50% on the airport rates. 
  • Tag your bags with your personal information both from the outside and inside.

Iberia Airlines Sports Baggage Policy

Per Iberia Airlines sports baggage policy, you can carry sporting equipment including but not limited to: 

  • Ski equipment
  • Golf equipment
  • Non-motorized single-seat bicycles
  • Skateboards
  • Bowling equipment
  • Surfboards not exceeding 3.5m in length 
  • Windsurfing boards
  • Bodyboards not exceeding 100 x 50 x 20cm
  • Scuba diving equipment
  • Paragliders
  • Hang gliders

The following conditions apply to the above-mentioned sporting equipment: 

  • The total weight of your sporting equipment (incl. packaging) must not exceed 50lb/23kg. Sporting equipment between 50–70lb (23–32kg) will incur an overweight fee. 
  • If you’re traveling on a long-haul flight (Asia, America, and South Africa), you can check in your sporting equipment as part of your free checked baggage allowance. If you’re carrying more than your free allowance, it will be treated as excess baggage. 
  • If you’re traveling on a short- or medium-haul flight, you will be charged a EUR 45 fee, regardless of your baggage allowance.
  • Large sporting equipment like pole vaults and canoes will be not accepted on Iberia and must be sent by IAG Cargo (901 111 400; from other countries +34-917481010. 

Conditions of Acceptance 

  • Ski Equipment 
    • Applies to snow/water and snowboard/monoski equipment.
    • Includes
      • Snow skis include 1 pair of skis/monoski, poles, boots; and 1 helmet. Can carry in up to 2 bags not exceeding 50lb/23kg.
      • Water skis include 1 bag comprising 1 pair of water skis (standard sized) or 1 slalom water ski.
    • Conditions of acceptance
      • Must be properly fixed, positioned, and packed to prevent injury or nuisance to other passengers while boarding or disembarkation, or during the flight. 
    • Allowance
      • Included in passenger’s free baggage allowance on long-haul flights, such as to Asia, America, and South Africa. Additional items exceeding the free baggage allowance will incur an excess baggage fee. 
      • On short- or medium-haul flights, passengers will be charged a USD 55* / EUR 45* fee per direction, regardless of the passenger’s baggage allowance. 
      • The maximum permissible weight is 50lb/23kg. Anything in excess and up to 70lb/32kg will incur an overweight baggage fee payable only at the airport. 

*For flights not operated by Iberia, check the conditions of carriage and allowance of the airline. On Vueling IB5000 routes or such flights connecting, a EUR 45 fee will be charged per flight. 

  • Golf Equipment
    • Includes 14 sticks, 12 balls, and 1 pair of shoes.
    • Conditions of acceptance
      • The clubs must be securely fastened in the bag to prevent injury or nuisance to other passengers while boarding or disembarkation, or during the flight.
    • Allowance
      • Included in passenger’s free baggage allowance on long-haul flights, such as to Asia, America, and South Africa. Additional items exceeding the free baggage allowance will incur an excess baggage fee. 
      • On short- or medium-haul flights, passengers will be charged a USD 55* / EUR 45* fee per direction, regardless of the passenger’s baggage allowance. 
      • The maximum permissible weight is 50lb/23kg. Anything in excess and up to 70lb/32kg will incur an overweight baggage fee payable only at the airport.

  • Bicycles 
    • Includes
      • Single-seat, non-motorized bicycles only; e-bikes and electric bikes will not be accepted. 
    • Conditions of acceptance 
      • Must be securely packed in an appropriate box or travel bag with the handlebars turned sideways along the length, pedals removed, and tires deflated.
      • Iberia provides containers measuring 131 x 72 x 21cm for EUR 20 at the following airports (subject to availability):
        • Spain: Vigo Barcelona, A Coruña, Santander, Madrid, Jerez, and Oviedo.
        • Europe: Venice, Rome, Milan (Malpensa and Linate), and Florence.
        • South America: Sao Paulo and Montevideo.
      • Bulky bicycles may be rejected or sent via Iberia Cargo per applicable fee. 
    • Allowance

      • Bodyboard/boogieboard comprises 1 board not exceeding 100 x 50 x 20cm in size.
      • Windsurf equipment comprises 1 board, boom, centerboard, sail, and mast, all of them securely wrapped together.
    • Max. 1 piece of equipment will be accepted per passenger. 
    • Must arrive early to allow enough time for checking in and loading the equipment. 
    • Will be accepted subject to space availability. 
    • Each item must be securely positioned, fastened, and packed to prevent breakage or cause injury or nuisance to other passengers while boarding or disembarkation, or during the flight.
    • Carriage of the equipment from the check-in point to the aircraft may incur additional charges if it cannot be transported properly on the conveyor belts.
      • Allowance

      • An inflatable rubber boat includes a transport bag comprising a rubber boat (without engine) and a pair of oars.
      • Personal floating device/life jacket comprising 1 inflatable jacket plus a 60g carbon dioxide cylinder.
    • Allowance
      • Included in passenger’s free baggage allowance on long-haul flights, such as to Asia, America, and South Africa. Additional items exceeding the free baggage allowance will incur an excess baggage fee.

Special Baggage Items

Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy, the Special Baggage items below are accepted under specific conditions due to their nature, weight, or size. Some of them require advance reservations and must be packed in a specific way to ensure they are protected from damage during normal handling. 

The following special baggage items must be transported per rules that apply specifically to them:

  1. Sporting equipment 
  2. Musical instruments
  3. Electric wheelchairs and mobility aids 
  4. Firearms 
  5. Large and heavy equipment 

How to Carry Special Baggage Items on Iberia Airlines

  1. Sports Equipment 
    Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy, the following conditions will typically apply to most sporting equipment: 
  • The total weight of your sporting equipment (incl. packaging) must not exceed 50lb/23kg. Sporting equipment between 50–70lb (23–32kg) will incur an overweight fee. 
  • If you’re traveling on a long-haul flight (Asia, America, and South Africa), you can check in your sporting equipment as part of your free checked baggage allowance. If you’re carrying more than your free allowance, it will be treated as excess baggage. 
  • If you’re traveling on a short- or medium-haul flight, you will be charged a EUR 45 fee, regardless of your baggage allowance.
  • Large sporting equipment like pole vaults and canoes will be not accepted on Iberia and must be sent by IAG Cargo (901 111 400; from other countries +34-917481010.

  1. Musical Instruments
    Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy:
  • Musical instruments can be carried as part of your carry-on or checked baggage allowance, or on a separate paid seat. 
  • Musical instruments taken as carry-on items must not exceed the standard measurements of a guitar, i.e., 30 x 120 x 38 cm.
  • Musical instruments and equipment (such as sound equipment, amplifiers, etc.) taken as checked baggage items must not exceed 190 x 75 x 65cm in size and 50lb/23kg in weight.
  • Musical instruments transported on a paid extra seat must be booked in advance via an Iberia Booking Center. You will be informed of the weight and size limits, and whether the instrument will be accepted. 
  • Musical instruments are included in a passenger’s free baggage allowance on long-haul flights, such as to Asia, America, and South Africa. Additional items exceeding the free baggage allowance will incur an excess baggage fee. Musical instruments carried on short- or medium-haul flights will be charged a USD 55* / EUR 45* fee per direction, regardless of the passenger’s baggage allowance. 
  • The maximum permissible weight is 50lb/23kg. Musical instruments or equipment weighing between 50–70lb (23–32kg) will incur an excess baggage fee, and musical instruments/equipment between 70–99lb^ (32–45kg^) will be treated as large equipment regardless of the route (short-, medium-, or long-haul) and incur an additional fee payable at the airport. 

* If traveling on an Iberia Regional Air Nostrum or Vueling flight (IB8XXX or IB5XXX), the airline’s specific regulations will apply. Also, in case of space constraints, the item will be transported in the aircraft hold.  

^ For flights departing from Brussels, the maximum checked baggage weight for all items is 70lb/32kg. 

  1. Electric Wheelchairs and mobility aids
    Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy:
    • Mechanically activated wheelchairs and mobility aids can be carried free of charge without incurring excess baggage charges.
    • Reduced-mobility passengers can carry 2 pieces of mobility aids at no additional charges.
    • Electric wheelchairs and mobility aids will only be accepted in the hold as part of a passenger’s free baggage allowance, subject to specific requirements. 
    • Dry-cell battery-operated wheelchairs can be taken as checked baggage items if:
      • The battery terminals are properly insulated from short-circuiting. 
      • The powerpack is disconnected. 
        The powerpack can remain attached to the wheelchair.
    • Wet-cell spillable battery-operated wheelchairs can be taken as checked baggage items if:
      • They can always be loaded, unloaded, and stowed in a vertical position. 
      • The battery terminals are properly insulated from short-circuiting.
      • The powerpack is disconnected (and can remain attached to the wheelchair). Alternatively, the powerpack should be removed, packed, and carried as a checked baggage item. The packaging must be in leakproof material that protects the powerpack from violent movements. The powerpack must be protected from short-circuiting, placed in a vertical position, and packed in absorbent material.
      • You notify Iberia Airlines in advance and share the wheelchair’s specifications, etc.
    • If travelling out of Czechoslovakia with an electric wheelchair, you must check it in and ask for a manual wheelchair to be escorted to the aircraft. 
    • If travelling on an IB5XXX flight, contact Vueling directly.
  1. Firearms
    Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy:
    • Can only be transported in the hold. 
    • Hunting and sport shooting equipment covers:
      • Rifles and shotguns 
        • 2 rifles or shotgun cases with up to 2 rifles or shotguns. 
        • Up to 11lb/5kg of ammunition per passenger. 
        • An extra suitcase for shooting materials such as gloves, footwear, suit, mat, tripods, scopes, wheels, spare parts, and small tools. 
      • Pistols (handguns)
        • 2 suitcases containing up to 5 pistols.
        • Up to 11lb/5kg of ammunition per passenger.
        • An extra suitcase for shooting materials such as gloves, footwear, suit, mat, tripods, scopes, wheels, spare parts, and small tools. 
    • Conditions of acceptance. 
      • The weapons must be unloaded and disassembled (except those which can’t be disassembled) and packed appropriately. 
      • The ammunition can only be carried in checked baggage after it is properly packed and labeled. The packing must be in a wooden, metallic, or pressboard box. 
      • The ammunition and weapons must not be packed together. 
    • If transporting weapons to/from Brazil, check this link
    • When checking in, the passenger should present an original copy of the authorization issued by the Airport Weapons Intervention Department. The container with the firearm must include a copy of the authorization. 
    • Such firearms will incur a charge of USD 90 / EUR 75, payable at the airport only.  Additional charges and taxes may apply per the destination country’s laws.
  2. Large and/or heavy equipment
    Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy, large and/or heavy equipment:
    • Includes audio/video/television equipment, industrial parts, musical equipment, etc.
    • If carrying equipment that exceeds 158cm (L + W + H), you will need to contact Iberia Airlines in advance to confirm space availability. 
    • Equipment weighing between 70–99lb* (32–45kg*) will be treated as an additional baggage item and subject to the following charges:
      • Domestic, European, the Middle East, and North Africa flights—USD 180 / EUR 150.
      • Flights to America, South Africa, Asia, Equatorial Guinea, and Senegal—USD 360 / EUR 300.
    • Equipment weighing between 50–70lb (23–32kg) will incur an overweight charge.

Per Iberia Airlines’ musical instruments policy, you can carry your musical instrument/equipment as carry-on or checked baggage, or purchase an extra seat for it.

Highlights of Iberia Airlines Musical Instruments Policy 

Per Iberia Airlines musical instruments policy:

  1. Musical instruments must not exceed the standard baggage limits.
    • If taken as a carry-on item, the dimensions (with packing) must not exceed 30 x 120 x 38cm.
    • If taken as a checked baggage item in the hold, its dimensions must not exceed 190 x 75 x 65cm in size and 50lb/23kg in weight. 
  2. If carried on a paid extra seat, the musical instrument/equipment must be booked in advance through an Iberia Booking Center. You will be informed of the weight and size limits, and whether the instrument will be accepted. 
  3. If you’re taking a long-haul flight such as to Asia, America, and South Africa, your musical instrument will be included in your free baggage allowance. But if you exceed your free baggage allowance, you will be charged an excess baggage fee. If you’re traveling with a musical instrument on a short- or medium-haul flight, you will be charged a fee of USD 55* / EUR 45* per direction, regardless of your baggage allowance. 
  4. The maximum standard permissible weight is 50lb/23kg. Musical instruments or equipment weighing between 50–70lb (23–32kg) will incur an excess baggage fee, and musical instruments/equipment between 70–99lb^ (32–45kg^) will be treated as large equipment regardless of the route (short-, medium-, or long-haul) and incur an additional fee payable at the airport.

  1. Musical Instrument as Carry-on/Cabin Baggage 
    Musical instruments not exceeding standard guitar measurements (30 x 120 x 38cm) can be taken as the sole piece of carry-on baggage (in addition to the personal item). However, you must pack it securely in a case. 

    If your musical instrument/equipment cannot be stored in the cabin due to space limitations, you can take it as a checked baggage item or book a seat for it.
  1. Musical Instrument on an Extra Seat
    You can carry a larger or delicate musical instrument by purchasing an extra seat for it.
    • You must contact an Iberia Booking Center in your area.
    • The Iberia Booking Center will inform you of the maximum weight and size limits.
    • The Iberia Booking Center will inform you whether you can carry the musical instrument.
    • The musical instrument must be securely packed to ensure it does not cause any injury to other passengers. 
    • The musical instrument must be secured on the seat with a seatbelt to avoid any movement during the flight. 
    • The musical instrument must not restrict any passenger’s/crewmember’s path.
    • The musical instrument must not obstruct any passenger’s view of the aircraft signage (seat belt/no-smoking/exit, etc.).
    • The airline will not take responsibility for inadequately packed instruments that are damaged during transit.
  1. Musical Instrument as Checked Baggage 
    Musical instruments unsuited for carriage in the cabin due to their weight and/or size must be checked in.
    • The maximum size must not exceed 190 x 75 x 65cm and the maximum weight must not exceed 50lb/23kg. Musical instruments/equipment weighing 50–70lb (23–32kg) will incur an excess baggage fee, and that between 70–99lb^ (32–45kg^) will be treated as large equipment regardless of the route (short-, medium-, or long-haul) and incur an additional fee payable only at the airport.
    • On long-haul flights to Asia, America, and South Africa, your musical instrument will be included in your free baggage allowance and subject to an excess baggage fee if you exceed your baggage limit. However, if you must pay a fee of USD 55* / EUR 45* on short- and medium-haul flights.

Oversized/Large Musical Instruments and Equipment

You will have to pay excess baggage charges for oversized musical instruments. Alternatively, you can send by cargo. 

What to Do If Your Iberia Airlines Baggage is Delayed, Lost, or Damaged

Delayed Baggage 

If your checked baggage does not arrive on your Iberia flight, you must report it immediately at the airport’s arrival lounge. 

  • Fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) before leaving the airport. After you file the report, you will be given a reference number that you will need to trace your bag(s) or file your claim. You will also be given a phone number.
  • If you have any questions, contact the Iberia Baggage Customer Service Center in your country. 

If your baggage cannot be found, you can: 

  • Request compensation through Iberia gift vouchers on Amazon. 
  • Request the replacement of your bag.

Damaged Baggage 

If your checked baggage arrives damaged, you must report it immediately at the airport’s arrival lounge. 

  • Fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) before leaving the airport. After you file the report, you will be given a reference number that you will need to trace your bag(s) or file your claim. You will also be given a phone number.
  • Fill out this form if you discover the damage later. 
  • If you have any questions, contact the Iberia Baggage Customer Service Center in your country. 
  • Ask for the replacement of your bag. 

What to Do If Something is Missing from Your Bag

If any items are missing from your bag, you must immediately report the missing items in person at the airport’s arrival lounge. 

How to track your missing Iberia Airlines baggage 

After you file the Property Irregularity Report (PIR), you can trace your missing baggage online via the World Tracer link.

Note

  1. To seek compensation for a damaged bag, you must file a claim in writing within 7 days of the bag’s arrival. The claim must be filed with the nearest Iberia Airlines airport office. Alternatively, you can contact your insurance company. 
  2. If the baggage was delayed and you want to seek compensation, you must file a complaint within 21 days of receiving your bag. 
  3. When submitting your claim, be sure to describe in detail the contents of your missing baggage, such as clothing items, gadgets, accessories, etc. 

Exceptions

Iberia Airlines will not cover the following: 

  • Minor damages—such as scuffs, cuts, scratches, dents, stains, dirt, marks, and punctures. 
  • Loss of or damage to protruding parts, such as covers, pull handles, wheels, external locks, zipper tabs, straps, belts, hooks, name tags, and pockets.
  • Items contained in overstuffed bags and improperly packaged items.
  • Pilferage or damages due to random searches by safety inspections of other countries.

Iberia Airlines’ Liability for Lost and Damaged Bags

Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy, Iberia Airlines’ liability for lost, damaged, or delayed bags (including contents) is limited to the amount mentioned below unless you have already declared a higher value and paid additional charges in advance. 

Liability for trips per the Montreal Convention. If your journey is governed by the Montreal Convention, Iberia Airlines’ liability will be limited to SDR 1,131 per passenger.

However, if you had made a special declaration stating a higher value for your bag’s contents and paid an additional fee for it before traveling, you will be paid a higher compensation based on the higher value declared by you. 

Prohibited Items on Iberia Airlines 

Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy, aside from the items mentioned below, the following items are prohibited in carry-on and checked bags:

  • Items prohibited by rules, regulations, and laws in the countries in your travel itinerary. 
  • Items stated as unsuitable by Iberia Airlines due to limitations relating to their nature, volume, weight, or quantity.

Iberia Airlines baggage policy considers the following items hazardous and dangerous—and does not permit them as carry-on or checked baggage:

  • Explosives, pyrotechnic materials, flares, mines, grenades, fireworks, munitions, etc.
  • Inflammable liquids such as petroleum, turpentine, adhesives, solvents, paints, varnishes, methanol, diesel oil, etc. 
  • Inflammable reagents and solids like matches, coal, sulfur, celluloid films, firework lighters, magnesium, etc.
  • Oxidizing substances like peroxides, bleaching powder, fertilizers, chlorates, bodywork repair kits, etc.
  • Toxic and infectious materials, such as incapacitating devices, diagnosis samples, rat poisons, bacteria, viruses, arsenic, infected blood, pesticides, herbicides, vaccines, etc. 
  • Radioactive materials.
  • Corrosive substances, such as alkalis, acids, mercury, apparatus containing mercury, alkalis, acids, wet cell batteries, etc.
  • Lithium batteries, e-cigarettes (can only be transported in the cabin), dry ice, car batteries, first-aid kits, ferromagnetic material, etc.
  • Carrying cases, security bags, money bags, and strongboxes with lithium batteries or pyrotechnics (smart bags will only be accepted if the batteries can be removed and you carry them with you in the cabin). 
  • Compressed gases—flammable, non-flammable, deeply refrigerated, and poisonous gases. Examples: propane, butane, aqualung cylinders, lighter fuels incl. refills, etc. 
  • Other dangerous items such as genetically modified organisms, magnetized materials, petrol engines, etc. 
  • Gases and gas cylinders, incl. but not limited to compressed gases, scuba tanks, nitrogen, insecticides, oxygen, acetylene, butane, propane, dissolved gases, refrigerated liquefied gases, compressed gases, etc. 
  • Liquid oxygen systems, electroshock weapons containing lithium batteries, compressed gases, or explosives, etc. 

Restricted Carry-on Baggage Items 

Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy, the items listed below will not be accepted in the cabin as hand baggage for safety and security reasons. However, you can pack them in your checked baggage.

  • Guns and firearms, such as weapons and devices discharging projectiles (revolvers, pistols, compressed air pistols, shotguns, toy pistols, flare guns, paintball guns, replicas, and imitation firearms, crossbows, bows for arrows, harpoon-fishing guns, catapults, slingshots, etc. If traveling with such items, check in the bag an agent. 
  • Stunning devices such as tasers, stun guns, stun batons, animal killers/stunners, mace, pepper/capsicum sprays, etc. 
  • Sharp weapon and objects with edges, such as axes, ice picks, razors, hatchets, axes, box cutters, arrows, darts, javelins, martial arts equipment with pointed or sharp edges, sabers, swords, scissors, knives, etc. 
  • Tools such as work tools, crowbars, blowtorches, circular saws, saws, drills, hammers, etc. can only be transported as cargo baggage by calling (+34)910059551.
  • Blunt instruments such as batons, clubs, bats, golf clubs, skateboards, oars, fishing rods, etc.
  • Explosives and incendiary material that can cause serious injury or threaten the aircraft’s safety, such as plastic explosives, gunpowder, dynamite, imitation devices, detonators, blasting caps, ammunition, etc. 

Iberia Airlines Baggage Policy for Smart Luggage 

Per Iberia Airlines baggage policy, smart luggage items containing non-removable lithium batteries are not allowed as carry-on or checked baggage. If carrying a smart luggage item with removable batteries, the following conditions must be complied with:

  • If carried as carry-on baggage:
    • The lithium battery must be removed and carried in the cabin. 
    • The baggage item must comply with the carrier’s cabin baggage policy.
  • If carried as checked baggage:
    • The lithium battery must be taken out and carried in the cabin.

Note: After removing the batteries, tape the terminals to prevent short-circuiting and pack each battery separately in a plastic bag.

Prohibited Items per the US Transport Security and Administration (TSA)

The US Transportation Security Administration prohibits passengers from carrying certain articles in carry-on and checked bags for safety reasons. Click here for more information as the list gets updated from time to time.

Liquids and Powders 

  • Liquids, gels, and aerosols must be placed in transparent quart-sized bags in your carry-on bags, and must not exceed 3.4 oz (100 ml). They must be placed in a clear plastic bag not exceeding 1 liter in capacity, with a closing and opening system. The contents of the bag must comfortably fit inside it the bag must be readily produced for inspection separately from the carry-on baggage. However, larger containers (incl. hairsprays and insect repellents) can be packed in checked bags. 
  • Powdered substances like coffee, powdered milk, spices, etc., must not exceed 12oz (350gm/350ml) in your carry-on bags if traveling internationally. However, larger quantities may be permitted in your checked bag after screening. 

The following liquids and powders are always allowed in hand baggage:

  • Baby foods for inflight consumption 
  • Medicines (with prescription)
  • Special diet foods for inflight consumption 
  • A deceased person’s ashes in an urn, subject to conditions 
  • Tax-free items inside a sealed bag (STEB)
