Avianca Airlines’ baggage policy is similar to that of other large airlines. 1 – 2 checked bags are included in your fare, depending on your travel class and destination, with additional fees charged for extra bags above your free baggage allowance.
The overweight and oversized baggage fees will depend on the weight, size, and route, as explained below.

On all flights (except to/from the United States), LifeMiles Gold and Diamond members and Star Alliance Gold status passengers travelling on Business Class are entitled to 1 additional carry-on bag of the same weight and dimensions.

Per Avianca Airlines checked baggage policy, all checked bags on Avianca Airlines must adhere to the following weight and size limits:
The number of bags you can carry will depend on your travel class and route (i.e., where you’re travelling to and from).
For example, if you’re travelling to/from Europe or between North and South America, your baggage allowance is 2 bags of up to 50b/23kg each on Economy Class. On all other routes, the baggage allowance on Economy Class is half of that, i.e., 1 bag of up to 50lb/23kg per passenger.
The baggage allowance on Business Class is 2 bags of up to 70lb/32kg each on all routes.

Per Avianca Airlines baggage regulations, if your baggage exceeds your allowance in terms of number of pieces, size, or weight, you will have to pay additional baggage fees. If a bag is within your free baggage allowance but it is overweight or oversized, the higher charge will apply. Also, as on any aircraft, the carriage of overweight, oversized and additional baggage is subject to space availability.

The bicycle must not exceed 230cm in combined linear dimensions and 70lb/32kg in weight. When packing, the handlebars must be folded and the pedals made loose.
Your scuba diving equipment/surfboard must not exceed 370cm in length, kitesurf boards must not exceed 366cm in length, windsurfing equipment must not exceed 366cm in length, and delta wings not exceed 5m in length.
Avianca Airlines Musical Instruments Policy
Avianca Airlines allows you to travel with your musical instrument as part of your free hand baggage or checked baggage allowance, or on a paid seat.
You can carry your musical instrument in place of your hand baggage if is within the following limits:
The instrument should be suitably packed and must fit in the overhead bin. If it cannot fit, you will have to either check it in or purchase an additional seat for it by calling or an Avianca office in your city/country.
Aside from your hand baggage, you will be able to carry the free personal item within your baggage allowance limits.
If you intend to carry your musical instrument as checked baggage, make sure that the external combined dimensions (when packed) do not exceed 158cm/62in and the total weight (when packed) does not exceed 50lb/23kg.

Lost/delayed baggage
If your baggage does not arrive when you land, you must immediately notify an Avianca Airlines staff at the airport, and show your original ticket, label, and travel document. You will then be asked to
complete a Baggage Irregularity Report, which you will need later to get your baggage back or file a claim. You can also complete submit the Baggage Irregularity Report online.

Damage or looting
If your baggage arrives in a damaged condition, Avianca’s staff will assess the damage and compensate you for the damage based on the route flown and within the prevailing limitations of liability.
Like most airlines, Avianca will not accept any responsibility for minor scratches, cuts, marks, or dents.
Lost items
Avianca Airlines liability in case of loss, damage, or destruction of luggage on international trips governed by the Montreal Convention is limited to SDR 1288 (~USD 1,821). However, if you insured your baggage and paid for it before travelling, the higher amount will apply.

The baggage weight limit of checked luggage on Avianca will depend on your travel class and route. A few important points to remember:
● If you’re travelling to or from Europe or between North and South America, your baggage weight limit is 100lb/46kg per passenger, i.e., 2 bags of up to 50lb/23kg each on Economy Class. Avianca Airlines excess baggage charges on international flights range from USD 40 – 60 for the first additional bag on most flights (all passengers can carry one bag for free). It can be as high as USD 100 per bag on flights between USA/Canada and Central America, and on flights to/from Europe during the high season.
