Asiana Airlines Baggage Policy

Asiana Airlines baggage policy for international and domestic flights uses a weight allowance for domestic flights and a piece allowance for other flights. 

A snapshot of the baggage allowance is as follows:

• Asiana Airlines carry-on baggage allowance is:
  • Economy Class. 1 carry-on bag plus 1 personal item.
  • Business/First Class. 2 carry-on bags plus 1 personal item.

The weight of each carry-on bag must not exceed 22lb/10kg and the size (H x W x D) must not exceed 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. The personal item (size undisclosed) can be a small briefcase or laptop. 

Lap infants are allowed 1 small collapsible stroller/portable cradle/car seat plus baby food for the flight.

• Asiana Airlines checked baggage allowance for international and domestic routes is:
  • For flights to/from the United States
    • 2 bags of 50lb/23kg each for Economy Class passengers. 
    • 2 bags of 70lb/32kg each for Business Class passengers.
  • For domestic flights within Korea
    • 44lb/20kg for Economy Class passengers
    • N/A for Business/First Class
  • For other flights (non-U.S. routes)
    • 1 bag of 50lb/23kg per passenger. 
    • 2 bags of 70lb/32kg each per passenger on Business Class.

Infants are allowed 1 checked bag of up to 22lb/10kg plus a portable stroller/car seat/bassinet/bassinet. 

• The combined linear dimensions (L + W + H) of a checked bag, regardless of travel class, must not exceed 158cm/62in, incl. handles and wheels.

Asiana Airlines Carry-on Baggage Allowance

Asiana Airlines carry-on baggage allowance is:

• 2 carry-on bags/handbags plus 1 small personal item on First/Business Class.
• 1 carry-on bag/handbag plus 1 small personal item on Economy Class. 

The small personal item (size undisclosed) can be a laptop, coat, or purse.

• *The following personal items are permitted:
  • Staff or crutches for disabled passengers

  • Large musical instruments with dimensions exceeding 115 cm—but the height not exceeding 155 cm—such as a cello, geomungo, gayageum, guitar, etc. 
  • Medical oxygen can be transported on Business Class by purchasing an additional seat.

Note

• For connecting domestic flights, the international baggage allowance will apply.

• Plastic baggage wraps are available on payment. 
• Refunds are not permitted. 
• Strollers may be refused at some boarding gates.

Additional Baggage Allowance for Asiana Club Members

Asiana Airlines offers free additional baggage allowance to Asiana Club members.

Domestic Routes

• Gold Class: Additional baggage of 22lb/10kg per passenger.
• Diamond Class: Additional baggage of 44lb/20kg per passenger.
• Platinum/Diamond Plus: Additional baggage of 66lb/30kg per passenger.

Economy Class

• U.S. Routes
  • Gold Class: A total baggage allowance of 1 bag x 70lb/32kg plus 1 bag x 50lb/23kg.
  • Platinum/Diamond Plus/Diamond: A total baggage allowance of 3 bags x 50lb/23kg.
• Non-U.S. International Routes
  • Gold Class: A total baggage allowance of 1 bag x 70lb/32kg.
  • Platinum/Diamond Plus/Diamond: A total baggage allowance of 2 bags x 50lb/23kg.

Business Class

• U.S./Non-U.S. International Routes
  • Gold Class: A total baggage allowance of 2 bags x 70lb/32kg plus 1 bag x 19lb/9kg.
  • Platinum/Diamond Plus/Diamond: A total baggage allowance of 3 bags x 70lb/32kg.

Asiana Airlines Excess Baggage 

You will be charged for excess baggage if:

• You’re carrying more bags than you’re permitted 
• Your bags exceed the maximum permissible weight or linear dimensions

The excess baggage fees will vary by destination and departing airport. To know the exact amount: 

Asiana Airlines Excess Baggage Fee for Domestic Routes within Korea

Asiana Airlines excess baggage fees for domestic routes within Korea is KRW 2,000 per kilo. For example, if you’re carrying 11lb/5kg of additional baggage, you’ll be charged KRW 10,000 for it.

Asiana Airlines Baggage Policy for Special Baggage 

If you’re carrying special baggage which is different size and shape from normal baggage and/or is more prone to damage during transportation: 

• You should pack it securely inside a case.
• You can pay a special fee for it to guarantee it from damage. 
• The maximum valuation must not exceed USD 2,500.
• Asiana Airlines liability for lost or damaged baggage will not extend beyond the terms and conditions specified in the Montreal Convention.

Asiana Airlines Sports Equipment Policy

You can travel with your sports equipment:

• Free

• As cabin baggage, if it fits in your hand baggage. 
• As checked baggage, if it fits into your checked baggage and it’s not restricted.
  
• For a fee

• If you’ve already used your allowance, you will have to put your extra bag(s) in the hold.
• If your sports equipment exceeds the maximum dimensions, you will need to have it shipped as cargo.

The carriage of sporting equipment is subject to the following conditions: 

• Golf equipment 
  • (1 golf bag + 1 regular bag) less than 32kg (70lb) will be treated as 1 checked bag.
  • (1 golf bag + 1 regular bag) between 32 – 45kg (70 – 99lb) will be treated as 2 checked bags.
• Snow/water skies/snowboarding equipment
  • (1 snow/ski bag + 1 regular bag) less than 32kg (70lb) will be treated as 1 checked bag.
  • (1 snow/ski bag + 1 regular bag) between 32 – 45kg (70 – 99lb) will be treated as 2 checked bags. 
• Surfboards, wakeboards, windsurfing equipment 
  • Must be packed securely.
  • Anything beyond your baggage allowance will be chargeable.
• Scuba diving equipment 
  • 1 empty tank + 1 diving bag is treated as one checked bag.
  • Must be fully dry and packed securely per rules.
  • Underwater lights must be carried on board.
  • Batteries must be separated and will be subject to transportation charges.
  • Anything beyond your baggage allowance will be chargeable.
• Bicycles
  • Anything beyond your baggage allowance will be chargeable.
  • Must be safely packed in a hard case with shock-absorbing buffer.
  • Motorized bicycles and jet skis are not allowed.
• Fishing equipment 
  • (1 fishing bag + 1 tackle box) will be treated as 1 checked bag.
  • Separately packed tackle will be counted separately. 
  • Anything beyond your baggage allowance will be chargeable.
• Hockey/lacrosse equipment
  • (1 equipment bag + 1 stick) will be treated as 1 checked bag.
  • A single stick will also be treated as 1 checked bag. 
  • Anything beyond your baggage allowance will be chargeable.

Note

• Baggage benefits for sports equipment on domestic routes have been discontinued. If you’re travelling domestically within Korea, you will be charged a baggage handling fee of KRW 10,000 for large baggage. 
• Sporting equipment measuring up to 277cm/109in in linear dimensions (L + W + H) will not be charged, but anything in excess will not be accepted. 
• For Asiana Club Excellence members, weight benefits do not apply toward golf, snowboard, and skiing equipment.

CPAP Devices

You’re allowed to carry a CPAP machine for sleep apnea only on the following conditions: 

• You must inform Asiana Airlines while booking.
• You may need to carry a doctor’s note for air travel. 
• The equipment must be battery-operated. 
• You must ensure that your battery supplies last for about 150% of the total flight time. 
• The battery capacity must not exceed 160 Wh.

Other Medical Equipment 

Other medical equipment you’re allowed to carry include:

• Cabin stretcher
  • Book at least 1 week in advance.
  • Must be accompanied by medical staff.
  • Must pay 6 times the Economy Class fare as charges.
• Medical oxygen
  • Must submit the required paperwork along with a doctor’s note when booking.
  • Must book at least 48 hours in advance.
  • Must pay USD 120 per tank for international flights and KRW 60k for domestic flights (non-refundable).
• Portable oxygen concentrator (POC)
  • The POC must be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
  • Must be battery-operated for safety reasons. 
  • The battery supplies must last for about 150% of the total flight time. 
  • The battery capacity must not exceed 160 Wh.
• Other auxiliary respiratory equipment
  • Must inform Asiana Airlines while booking. 
  • For medical conditions other than sleep apnea, a doctor’s note may be required. 
  • Must be battery operated for safety reasons (in-cabin power use not permitted). 
  • The battery supplies must last for about 150% of the total flight time. 
  • The battery capacity must not exceed 160 Wh.

How to Pre-purchase Baggage Fee on Asiana Airlines 

If you’re planning to travel with more luggage than your free baggage allowance permits, you can pre-purchase your baggage online via the Find My Trip page (up to 24 hours before departure) at up to a 10% discount compared to the airport rate.

Asiana Airlines allows you to pre-purchase your luggage:

• During the reservation process
• At least 24 hours before your flight

Asiana Airlines Musical Instruments Policy

Asiana Airlines allows you to travel with your musical instrument for free if it fits within your baggage allowance. 

• Asiana Airlines Baggage Policy on Carrying Small Musical Instruments
  You can carry small musical instruments like violins free of charge on the following conditions:
  • The combined dimensions (length, width, and height) do not exceed 115cm.
  • They can be stored in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
    
• Asiana Airlines Baggage Policy on Carrying Large Musical Instruments as Cabin Baggage
  You can carry larger musical instruments (up to 155cm long) under the following conditions:
  • For large and valuable musical instruments (guitars, cellos, etc.) you will need to purchase an additional seat—provided that the total length (incl. case) is less than 155cm (150cm for cello cases).
  • For details or to buy an additional seat, call or the local Asiana Airlines office in your city or country.
    
• Asiana Airlines Baggage Policy on Carrying Large Musical Instruments as Checked Baggage
  You can carry large musical instruments as checked baggage or air cargo baggage under the following conditions:
  • You have packed your musical instrument in a hard case with adequate cushioning material specifically designed for shipping similar items. 
  • You will pay excess baggage charges if the weight, size, or dimensions exceed your free baggage allowance. 

What to Do If Your Baggage is Missing on Asiana Airlines

If you can’t locate your checked baggage after arriving:

• Report your missing bag to an Asiana Airlines staff member if you’re still at the airport.
• Report your missing bag if you’ve already left the airport.

Note. You must inform Asiana Airlines of your bag’s loss in writing no later than 21 days of checking in your bag with the airline.

How to Report Damage to a Bag or Contents

(incl. missing contents)

• Report to an Asiana Airlines staff member before you leave the airport.
• Contact Asiana Airlines if you’ve already left the airport.

Note. You must report the damages and/or loss within 7 days of claiming your bag.

Asiana Airlines Baggage Compensation Policy 

If your luggage was damaged in transit (i.e., during transportation or storage), Asiana Airlines will compensate you per the following conditions:

• You must report the damage or loss of contents in writing within 7 days of claiming the bag
• You must report the delay or loss in writing within 21days of after checking in your bag
• If eligible, you will be entitled to the following compensation:
  • Up to 250 Gold Francs or approx. USD 20/kilogram for flights governed by the Warsaw Convention.
  • Up to SDR 1,288 per passenger for flights governed by the Montreal Convention.
  • A higher compensation under exceptional conditions.

Asiana Airlines Baggage Claim

Banned and Restricted Items

Asiana Airlines prohibits the carriage of certain items in the cabin for safety reasons. They are briefly described below.

Restricted Items

• Spare lithium batteries, e-cigarettes, and lighters are not permitted inside checked baggage; you need to carry such items inside the cabin.
• Explosive, flammable, and toxic substances such as fireworks, grenades, bleach agents, mercury, oxidizing agents, poisonous material, alcoholic beverages with 70% or more alcohol content, tear gas, fire extinguishers, etc.
• Inflammable, high-pressure containers 

Liquids, Creams, Aerosols & Powders

• Liquids
  • Can only be in 100 ml or smaller containers.
  • Must be packed together in a resealable, transparent plastic bag of 1 liter capacity per passenger.
• Medicines
  • Liquid medication and infant foods may be carried in appropriate amounts. 
• Liquids purchased at duty-free shops
  • Alcohols, perfumes, and other liquids provided they are packed in tamper-evident bags.

Permitted Carry-on Items

The following items can be carried in appropriate amounts for the flight and must be reported during security check:

• Pharmaceutical Drugs
  • Prescription medication 
  • Over-the-counter medicines
• Non-pharma drugs
  • Ice for medical purposes 
  • Blood and other related liquids for patients 
• Prescription diets
• Children’s supplies
