ANA Baggage Allowance Policy

The ANA baggage policy is generous compared to other airlines—even Economy Class passengers are entitled to a free baggage allowance of 2 checked bags on base fares. However, if you’re travelling with overweight or oversized bags, you will be charged a fee for exceeding each category.

  1. ANA’s carry-on baggage allowance is 22lb/10kg and includes:
    1. 1 personal item (must fit under your front seat or in the overhead bin), and
    2. 1 carry-on bag not exceeding 55 x 40 x 25cm (22 x 16 x 10in) in size
  2. ANA’s checked baggage allowance on domesticroutes is:
    1. 44lb/20kg per passenger for Economy Class fares. 
    2. 88lb/40kg per passenger for Premium Class fares.
  3. ANA’s checked baggage allowance on international routes is:
    1. 2 bags of 50lb/23kg each for Economy Class fares.

  5. The excess baggage fee is cheaper if paid online in advance than at the airport.

      1. ANA Mileage Club Diamond and Platinum members can carry 44lb/20kg of additional baggage (primary members only).

  7. Sports equipment is treated as part of your free baggage allowance. No oversized baggage charge will apply to sporting equipment measuring up to 292cm/115in in combined linear dimensions.
  8. Fully collapsible pushchairs/strollers/car seats/carrying baskets for infants and children, and wheelchairs and assistive devices for disabled passengers can be carried free of charge in addition to the free baggage allowance. 
  9. If you’re travelling with a passenger (or passengers) on the same flight and booking, you’re allowed to pool your baggage allowance

ANA Baggage Allowance Rules—Carry-on Baggage

– The size of the carry-on baggage includes wheels, handles, and baggage attachments.
– If you’re occupying a seat with no seat ahead, you cannot place your baggage by your feet.
– The carry-on baggage allowance is the same for domestic and international flights but subject to the above-mentioned restrictions.
– If you’re flying in a domestic sector within Japan on a ticket on which international carriage conditions apply, the international baggage rules will apply.
– You can purchase an extra seat for large baggage items such as musical instruments. 
– Carry-on baggage cannot be carried in carry-on bags.
– Tripods exceeding 60cm (folded) are not allowed.

ANA Carry-on Baggage Allowance for Lap Infants

What is the ANA baggage policy for lap infants?

ANA allows you to bring a baby stroller on board if it fits within your baggage size limit when folded. 

  • If you’re bringing a baby stroller onboard for your child, you cannot bring another carry-on bag. However, you can bring a personal item onboard, such as a handbag, umbrella, or camera. 
  • You must fold your baby stroller and pack it in a case before going through the ticket gate. If you don’t have a case, ask ANA for a plastic bag. 

ANA Checked/Check-in Baggage Allowance

ANA’s checked/check-in baggage allowance is 2 – 3 bags of 50 or 70lb each per passenger, depending on your travel class, as shown below.

ANA Baggage Allowance Rules—Checked Baggage
Per Air Nippon Airlines’ baggage rules:
– The combined linear dimensions (L + W + H) of a bag must not exceed 158cm/62in (incl. handle and wheels).
– All checked luggage must be checked in either at a check-in counter or a self-service machine. 
– Itineraries including flights by other carriers may also be subject to the other airline’s baggage rules. 
– If you’re travelling on Premium Economy fare domestically within Japan, you will be entitled to the First Class baggage allowance.

Checked Baggage Allowance for Children on ANA Airlines

If you’re travelling with a lap infant (below 2 years of age) who does not occupy a seat, you’re allowed to carry one extra piece of baggage (for free) in addition to your baggage allowance. The weight and size of the additional bag must be per the standard baggage rules that apply to your ticket. 

ANA Airlines baggage allowance for children occupying their own seats is the same as that of the accompanying adult passenger.

Baggage Drop Machines

You can use a self-service baggage drop machine at select airports. If you’ve checked in for your flight and have a boarding pass, you can proceed directly to a self-service machine to check in your baggage. 

  • The following passengers travelling on international flights will need to go to an ANA check-in counter, i.e., they cannot use a self-service baggage drop machine:
  • Passengers requiring boarding assistance.
  • Passengers who need to pay excess baggage fees.
  • Passengers who will be checking in fragile, dangerous, and non-standard baggage. 
  • Passengers travelling with pets.
  • Passengers who will be checking in golf bags, surfboards, skis/snowboards, strollers, tripods, or umbrellas.
  • If you’ve printed a baggage tag on a self-service baggage drop machine, attach it to your bag and check in the bag.
  • The self-service baggage drop machines are available at: 
  • Tokyo (Narita) Airport (only for flights to the U.S. and Mexico) from 2.5 hours before departure till the check-in counters close.
  • Hong Kong Airport from 2.5 hours before departure till the check-in counters close.

Passengers Using Wheelchairs on ANA

Due to space limitations, you should check in your wheelchair at the check-in counter and use ANA’s wheelchair. You will be provided an attendant who will help you to your seat. ANA’s aircraft cabins are equipped with a wheelchair for convenience. 

  • If you’ll be using your own wheelchair to/from the aircraft:  
  • Notify ANA in advance. 
  • For flight eligibility and size restrictions, check with ANA’s staff at the airport. 
  • On international routes, ANA will accept only 1 foldable manual wheelchair. 

Passengers Using Electric Wheelchairs

If you’ll be carrying an electric wheelchair, you must: 

  • Provide the following information to ANA when booking your flight:
    • Weight and size of the wheelchair.
    • Type of battery/batteries used. 
  • Check in at least 2 hours before your flight’s departure.

Excess Baggage Charges

What are the additional/excess baggage fees on ANA?

You will be charged an excess baggage fee for exceeding your free baggage allowance. The baggage fee and currency will depend on your itinerary, the airport where you’ll be paying the fees, and the flight sectors where you will check in the baggage. If you’re flying on a domestic route within Japan, ANA will accept up to 220lb/100kg of baggage per flight.

  • Area 1 – North America, Central, and South America, and Hawaii.
  • Area 2 – Europe, Russia (West of the Urals), the Middle East, and Africa.
  • Area 3 – Russia (East of the Urals), Asia (incl. Japan), and Oceania.

Prepaid Excess Baggage

Can I prepay for excess baggage on ANA?

ANA allows you to pre-pay for excess baggage online up to 6 hours before departure.
You can do this by accessing your flight booking on ANA’s website as follows: 

  1. Go to ANA’s Search Reservation page 
  2. Go to the Reservation Details page as follows:
    1. Enter your reservation number, first name, and last name, or
    2. Select and enter your e-Ticket number, first name, and last name 
    3. Click on the Search button
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to select your flight and add extra baggage
  4. Confirm and pay

You can also pre-pay for excess baggage by logging into your ANA Mileage Club account.

What to Do if Your Baggage is Damaged or Lost on ANA

  • Damaged Baggage. If your baggage arrives in a damaged condition on an ANA flight, you must:
    • Immediately report it to ANA’s airport staff.  
    • If you notice the damage after leaving the airport, you must submit (by fax or postal mail) a  Damaged Baggage Declaration Form within 7 days of claiming your baggage. When submitting the form, be sure to provide a copy of your:
      • Ticket receipt 
      • Boarding pass
      • Baggage claim tag

ANA will inform you of the next steps after receiving the form.

You may not be compensated for minor damages including but not limited to: 

  • Dirt marks, scuffs, dents, or cuts.
  • Damage to wheels, pockets, handles, or other protruding parts. 
  • Inadequately packed articles in overstuffed bags. 
  • Missing Baggage. If your baggage doesn’t arrive, you must notify ANA’s airport staff immediately.
    • You will be given a reference number which you will require for making a claim in case it cannot be found. 
    • You can track the status of your baggage by entering this reference number on the Baggage Tracing System website.
    • You may be asked to fill out a Missing Property Questionnaire which will be used for reference when compensating you if the bag cannot be found. This can take 30 – 45 days. 

ANA’s Liability for Lost and Damaged Bags

ANA’s liability for lost or delayed baggage on the carriage of baggage subject to the Montreal Convention will be limited to SDR 17 per kilo or SDR 1,288 per passenger for checked baggage, and SDR 332/5,000 French Gold Francs) for unchecked baggage per passenger. 

  • If the passenger has declared a higher value and paid for it, the liability will be limited to the higher declared value. 
  • Damage to assistive devices, mobility aids, and wheelchairs, is compensated at higher rates. 

ANA Sports Equipment Policy 

ANA treats sporting equipment as part of your free baggage allowance. An oversized baggage fee will not apply to sporting equipment if it measures up to 292cm/115in in combined linear dimensions. 

Sporting equipment that you can carry free of charge within your baggage allowance includes (but is not limited to):

  • Bicycles
  • Golf bags
  • Rackets 
  • Diving equipment
  • Fishing equipment
  • Skis/snowboards
    (All the equipment, such as skis, poles, boots, etc., must be packed together. Individually packed items will incur an excess baggage charge)
  • Surfboards

If your sporting equipment exceeds your free baggage allowance, you will have to pay the applicable excess baggage charges. 

Exceptions. The combined linear dimensions of your sporting baggage can exceed the dimensions below without it being treated as oversized baggage:

Points to Remember

  • You must notify ANA by phone if the total linear dimensions of your sporting equipment exceed 203cm/80in. Ask as early as you can as confirmations can take time.
  • You must pack your sporting equipment properly.
  • Badminton and tennis rackets can be carried onboard or checked in as long as they’re within your baggage size limits. 
  • Electric bicycles are accepted (subject to your compliance with the lithium battery requirements), but electric vehicles are not allowed on aircraft. 

ANA Baggage Policy for Musical Instruments 

International Flights. ANA allows you to travel with musical instruments as part of your free baggage allowance. If your musical instrument exceeds the free baggage allowance limits, excess baggage charges will apply. However, the size (combined linear dimensions) is handled differently from normal baggage. 

  • No oversized baggage charges will apply for musical instruments with combined dimensions of up to 203cm/80in. 
  • Musical instruments measuring between 203cm/80in – 292cm/115in will incur excess baggage charges (subject to route/aircraft restrictions), but you must inform ANA in advance.
  • Musical instruments exceeding 292cm/115in cannot be checked in.
  • You’re allowed to purchase an extra seat for large/delicate musical instruments.

Domestic Flights. You’re allowed to carry musical instruments on board as long as it is within your free baggage allowance limits. If it exceeds your carry-on allowance, you can either check it in or purchase an additional seat for it by paying a special passenger fee. ANA also provides special cases for musical instruments like violins and guitars. 

  • If the combined linear dimensions are less than 115cm:
    • You can carry your musical instrument as part of your carry-on baggage.
    • This applies to aircraft with 100 seats or more. If your aircraft has less than 100 seats, the combined linear dimensions must not exceed 100cm. 
    • If any of the 3 dimensions exceed 55cm, 40cm, or 25cm (45cm, 35cm, and 20cm for aircraft with fewer than 100 seats), you must inform ANA in advance and seek approval. 
    • You must store your musical instrument in the overhead bin. 
  • If the combined linear dimensions exceed115cm:
    • You must check in your musical instrument. 
    • If your aircraft’s seating capacity is less than 100 seats, musical instruments exceeding 100cm must be checked in.
    • You can ask for a special instrument case if you’re not carrying one. 
    • Large or fragile instruments can be carried on a paid seat by paying a special passenger fee:
      • The special passenger fee for Economy Class is JPY 11,500 (or JPY 6,300 on some routes) and JPY 19,900 (or JPY 14,700 on some routes) on Premium Class fares.
      • The special passenger fee can be cancelled (cancellation fee = 20% of the fare) and refunded (refund fee = JPY 440 per sector).
