Philippine Airlines Sporting Equipment Policy

Per Philippine Airlines’ sports baggage policy, you can bring your sports equipment as part of your normal baggage allowance. If the sporting equipment exceeds your baggage allowance, standard Excess Baggage Charges (EBC) will apply.

How to Carry Special Baggage Items on Philippine Airlines

1. Batteries and Flammable Liquids
   1. Battery-operated wheelchairs and similar mobility devices powered by spillable/non-spillable batteries can be checked in, subject to the following conditions:
      1. Must notify in advance and receive approval before traveling. 
      2. Insulate the battery terminals to prevent short-circuiting.
      3. Secure the battery properly to the wheelchair.
      4. Always load, stow, secure, and unload the wheelchair or mobility device in an upright position. 
      5. Carry the battery in strong and rigid packaging material. 
      6. Leaky, damaged, and improperly packaged batteries will not be accepted. 
      7. Spare lithium batteries cannot be carried as checked baggage—they must be carried as cabin/carry-on items only. 
   2. The watt-hour rating must not exceed:
      1. 100Wh per rechargeable lithium-ion battery. 
      2. 2 grams per non-rechargeable lithium metal battery.
   3. Up to 2 spare lithium-ion batteries of 100-160Wh are allowed as carry-on baggage items. 
   4. If carrying spare batteries, protect them from damage and short-circuit by carrying the batteries in their original packaging, taping the terminals, and placing them in individual plastic bags. 
   5. Banned items. The following cannot be carried with or without batteries as checked, carry-on, or cargo baggage:
      1. Solo-wheels
      2. Mini-Segways
      3. Hoverboards
      4. Air Wheels
      5. ​Balance Wheels
   6.  Flammable Liquids. Flammable liquids of any type, incl. paints, thinners, and lighter refills will not be accepted as carry-on or checked baggage items.
2. Bulky, Fragile, and Limited Release Baggage
   1. The following items can be carried after submitting a Limited Release Baggage tag, releasing the airline from any liability during transport:
      1. Bulky items exceeding standard dimensions, such as:

3. Cabin Baggage
   1. Cabin Baggage items include valuable items such as musical instruments, religious items, etc., that occupy a paid seat. 
   2. Cabin Baggage items must meet the following criteria:
      1. Only one item is allowed per seat. 
      2. Must be properly packed to avoid injury to others.
      3. The maximum weight must not exceed 165lb/75kg. 
      4. The maximum height must not exceed the height of the seat’s backrest.
      5. Must be booked in advance via a PAL Ticket Office.
4. Guns and Ammunition
   1. Authorized and qualified passengers are allowed to carry firearms as checked baggage items, subject to the following conditions:
      1. They must be inaccessible to unauthorized people during the flight. 
      2. Must be unloaded and/or disabled. 
      3. Must be packed in a suitable container and checked-in as cargo or hold baggage. 
      4. The passenger must carry a special authorization per U.S. laws involved. 
      5. The documentation for destination and transit countries must be arranged in advance by the passenger. 
   2. Ammunition such as cartridges:
      1. Must be packed securely. 
      2. Must not exceed 11lb/5kg (incl. packaging) per passenger. 
      3. Must be carried as a checked baggage item.
   3. Any projectile-discharging type of weapon (such as spearguns, harpoon guns, etc.) must be unloaded and carried as a checked baggage item.
5. Human Remains
   1. Human ashes can be transported in urns as hand baggage items if accompanied by the following documentation:
      1. A valid Death Certificate
      2. A valid Cremation Certificate
   2. If traveling to/from the United States, the ashes must be placed in a clear plastic bag before being placed in an urn to enable physical and x-ray screening.
   3. If traveling out of the Philippines, you will require a permit from the Bureau of Quarantine, South Harbor, Port Area, Manila (Tel. Number: 301-9104).
   4. If transporting human remains by cargo, arrange the following documents in advance:
      1. Quarantine Permit/Certificate
      2. Death Certificate
      3. Embalming Certificate (if required) 
      4. Cremation Certificate
      5. Mortuary Certificate stating that the remains have been placed in the prescribed urn, casket, or container
      6. Transit Permit (if required)
      7. Consular Certificate
   5. Non-cremated remains must be placed in a hermetically-sealed casket made of metal or wood, and then packed in a coffin. The crate or outer packaging must:
      1. Protect the coffin 
      2. Prevent the nature of its content from being made apparent
      3. Include handles for lifting
   6. Funeral urns containing cremated remains must be adequately cushioned and protected against breakage inside the packaging.
6. Musical Instruments
   1. Musical instruments can be carried as part of the passenger’s free baggage allowance (carry-on or checked baggage). Musical instruments (such as guitars) that don’t fit under the passenger seat or overhead bin must be checked in, preferably in a hard case. 
   2. Musical instruments must be properly packed to prevent damage. PAL will not take any responsibility for inadequately packed instruments that are damaged during transit. 
   3. Passengers are allowed to carry their musical instruments on a paid seat as a Cabin Baggage product.
7. Pets
   1. Pets like cats, dogs, and birds are allowed to travel as checked baggage on most flights. 
   2. Pets are not allowed to travel in the cabin with their owners (except trained service dogs). They are subject to excess baggage charges—and not included in a passenger’s free baggage allowance.
   3. Call the Reservations Office at least 48 hours before departure to find out if the pet will be accepted as baggage at the airport of origin. 
   4. Brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dog breeds will not be accepted on any flight.

8. Plants
   1. Since plant import restrictions vary by country, you will need to contact the local agriculture or plant authority office of the destination country to learn about their specific import requirements and restrictions. 
   2. To learn about the plant import requirements in the Philippines, contact the Bureau of Plant Industry in Manila.
9. Seafood, Meat, and Other Perishable Items
   1. Most countries have placed a ban on bringing meat and poultry products, incl. perishable items. You will need to contact the appropriate authorities in the destination country, such as Customs or their Bureau of Plant and Quarantine, to learn about their specific regulations. 
   2. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not allow cooked or uncooked meat and poultry products, from areas that have been affected by certain animal diseases. You will need to contact the authorities for more information.
   3. If traveling within the Philippines, passengers are allowed to check-in seafood, meat, and perishable items if they are properly packed in leakproof containers. 
10. Sports Equipment
    1. Most sports equipment can be carried as part of the normal baggage allowance. They include snow skis, golf gear, non-motorized bicycles, fishing equipment, sleeping bags, bedrolls, and other sporting equipment. 
    2. Excess baggage charges (EBC) will apply for surfboards and wakeboards. 
    3. Sporting equipment that exceeds the weight and/or size limits of your baggage allowance will be subject to standard Excess Baggage Charges (EBC).

11. Medications and Medical Oxygen
    1. Medications. Non-radioactive medications can be carried per the following conditions:
       1. Must not exceed 4.4lb/2kg or 2 liters. 
       2. The net quantity per item must not exceed 1lb/0.5kg or 0.5 liter (1 pint).

    2. Medical oxygen. Passengers requiring medical oxygen during their flight:
       1. Must use only carrier-supplied medical oxygen.
       2. Can carry their own oxygen cylinder/bottle provided:
          1. It does not exceed 11lb/5kg. 
          2. It is packed properly. 
          3. It is not used onboard.
             However, passengers are allowed to use their own oxygen bottles before embarking and after disembarking.

Philippine Airlines Musical Instruments Policy

Per Philippine Airlines’ musical instruments policy, musical instruments/equipment can be carried as part of your carry-on or checked baggage allowance. Alternatively, you can purchase an extra seat to accommodate it as a Cabin Baggage product. 

Tips 

• You must pack your musical instrument securely to prevent damage to it as well as cause injury to others. 
• Consider checking in large musical instruments.
• Insure costly musical instruments before travelling. 

1. Musical Instrument as Carry-on Baggage 

You can bring a small musical instrument as part of your carry-on baggage. Do make sure to pack it securely in a case, that it is small enough to fit in the space allotted to you, and it falls within your baggage allowance limit: 

• Max. Weight 15lb/7kg 
• Max. Dimensions 56cm x 36cm x 23cm (22in x 14in x 9in)

If your musical instrument cannot be stored in the cabin due to space limitations, you will need to carry it as checked baggage or purchase an additional seat for it.

2. Musical Instrument as a Cabin Baggage Product

You can carry a larger musical instrument by purchasing an additional seat for it. Carrying a musical instrument as a Cabin Baggage product is subject to the following conditions:

• Only one musical instrument is allowed per seat. 
• The total weight of the musical instrument (incl. case) must not exceed 165lb (75kg).
• The maximum height must not exceed the height of the seat’s backrest.
• The musical instrument must be securely packed to prevent injury or damage.
• The musical instrument must be fastened to the seat with a seatbelt.
• The musical instrument must be booked in advance by calling or your local PAL Ticket Office.
• PAL will not take any responsibility for inadequately packed instruments that are damaged during transit.

3. Musical Instrument as Checked Baggage 

Musical instruments unsuited for carriage in the cabin due to their weight and/or size—such as drums, harps, double basses—must be checked in. However, you must pack the instrument securely to prevent damage.

Philippine Airlines Baggage Services for Missing Baggage 

If your checked baggage does not arrive, you should report it immediately at the Baggage Assistance Counter in the arrival area and file a report. After you file a report, a file reference number will be issued to you which you can use to trace your bag(s) or file a claim if required. 

If your baggage on an international flight has not been found by the seventh day of being reported missing, you must: 

1. Fill out PAL’s Baggage Claim form.
2. Email it to baggage_tracing@pal.com.ph for further action. 

Note

1. You must file a written complaint within 21 days of receiving your delayed baggage. 
2. If you wish to claim any damages in court, you must file for damages within 2 years of the aircraft’s actual or scheduled arrival. Failure to act within these timelines will disqualify you from making any claim.
3. When filling out the form, be sure to describe in detail the contents of your missing baggage, such as clothing items, gadgets, accessories, etc. 

Philippine Airlines Baggage Services for Damaged Baggage 

If you notice any damage to your bag upon arrival, report it immediately at the Baggage Assistance Counter in the arrival area and file a report. After you file a report, you will be informed of the next steps.

Philippine Airlines Liability for Lost and Damaged Bags

Damaged, delayed, and lost baggage compensation 

Philippine Airlines’ liability for lost, damaged, or delayed bags (including contents) is limited to the amounts mentioned below unless you declare a higher value and pay the additional charges in advance. 

• Liability for trips governed by the Warsaw Convention. If your journey is covered by the Warsaw Convention, Philippines Airlines’ liability will be limited to:
  • For checked baggage—SDR 17/kg/per passenger (EUR 20). 
  • For unchecked baggage—SDR 332 (approx. EUR 400). 

The carrier may also be liable for damage due to delay. 

• Liabilityfor trips governed by the Montreal Convention. If your journey is governed by the Montreal Convention, Philippines Airlines’ liability will be limited to:
  • For checked baggage—SDR 1,288 (approx. EUR 1,602) per passenger.
  • For cargo baggage—SDR 22 per kilo (approx. EUR 27 per kilo)

You will only be paid a higher compensation if you make a special declaration, state a higher value for your bag’s contents, and pay an additional fee before travelling.  

Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels (LAGs) Restrictions

Liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs), as well as pastes, and creams, are allowed in the cabin in 100ml containers only. The 100ml containers must be packed in a clear plastic bag with a maximum volume of 33.8oz (1L) per passenger, measuring approx. 20cm x 20cm. LAGs must be completely sealed, and you should be able to present them for visual inspection at security.

Exemptions 

Items like baby foods for consumption during the flight, prescribed medications, and liquid retail items you buy at the airport or on the aircraft are excepted from the above-mentioned restrictions. 

Prohibited Items

Prohibited items in checked baggage and carry-on baggage 

The items listed below are prohibited on Philippine Airlines—both as checked and carry-on baggage:

• Corrosive batteries and substances.
• Gases, LPG, camp stoves, etc. 
• Recalled or damaged batteries. 
• Flammable liquids, paints, thinners, etc. 
• Radioactive material.
• Infectious substances, blood, viruses, etc.
• Lighters and matches. 
• More than 2 grams of Lithium C size or larger non-rechargeable batteries.
• Airwheels, solowheel, mini Segways, hoverboards, balance wheel, etc.—with or without batteries. 
• Small vehicles powered by greater than 160Wh rechargeable Lithium batteries.
• Oxidizing materials, paint strippers, etc. 
• Toxic substances. 
• Organic peroxides, bleach, etc.
• Explosives, flares, fireworks, detonators, grenades, dynamite, plastic explosives, torch, etc.
• Other dangerous items, including offensive or irritating materials, magnetized materials, etc.

Prohibited Cabin Baggage Items 

Philippine Airlines does not allow passengers to use travel accessories and devices that can be attached to or inserted between the seats, such as knee defenders, bed boxes, etc., as they may damage the seats/fixtures, block access to the emergency equipment, or stall evacuation in case of an emergency. 

The following items are prohibited in the cabin and must be packed in checked bags: 

• Swiss knives, sharp objects, blades, scissors, and nail cutters.
• All types of umbrellas.
• Bicycle jacks or chains and similar items.
• Lighters containing butane and matches are prohibited on the aircraft—both as carry-on and checked baggage items. However, Zippo lighters are allowed as carry-on and checked baggage items if completely drained of their contents.
• Liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) are allowed if carried in quantities up to 100ml per container, provided they are placed in airtight plastic bags (to prevent leakage).
• All types of adhesive tapes—rubber, electrical, duct, scotch, packing, masking, etc.
• All other articles and substances that might pose a risk to the safety, health, environment, or property are prohibited as carry-on and checked baggage items. 

Note. Medications, fragile or perishable items, and valuable items such as jewelry, cameras, money, etc. should not be checked in but carried as carry-on baggage in the cabin. 

Prohibited Items per the US Transport Security and Administration (TSA)

The US Transportation Security Administration prohibits passengers from carrying certain articles in carry-on and checked bags for safety reasons.
