JetBlue Pet Policy

JetBlue allows small cats and dogs to travel in the cabin on all domestic and most international flights. The JetBlue pet policy does not accept pets as checked baggage or air cargo. JetBlue accepts only 4 pets per aircraft, so you must book in advance online or by calling 1-800-JETBLUE (538-2583).

JetBlue Pet Travel PolicyIn-Cabin Pets

If your dog or cat meets JetBlue’s to travel in the cabin, you must use an airline-approved pet carrier. 

  • Pets Allowed. Only small dogs and cats are allowed in the passenger cabin.
  • Age Requirements. Your puppy or kitten must be at least 8 weeks old to travel domestically and must conform to the import requirements of the destination country if traveling abroad.
  • Forms Required/Documentation
    • On domestic flights within the U.S., forms are not required
      (except when flying to the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico).
    • On international flights, health and vaccination certificates are required, incl. ID tags and pet license.
  • Pet Reservations. You can book online or by phone. 
  • Check-in
    • You must check in your pet at the airport’s Full-Service Counter. 
    • However, you can check in online, with the mobile app, or at an airport self-service kiosk if you’ve already paid the pet fee and your pet reservation is confirmed.
  • Pet Fee. USD 125 per way.
  • Pet Carrier Requirements
    • Both hard-sided and soft-sided carriers are permitted.  
    • The total weight of the pet (incl. carrier) must be more than 20lb/9kg
    • The total size of a hard-sided carrier must not exceed:
      • 43cm/17in in length 
      • 31cm/12.5in in width 
      • 21cm/8.5in in height 
    • Soft-sided carriers must compress to 21cm/8.5in.
    • Your pet must be able to stand up and move around inside the carrier with ease.  
    • The carrier’s bottom must be leak-proof and the carrier well ventilated.  
    • Carriers must not allow the animal to escape. 
    • The pet carrier counts as a carry-on baggage item. 

Tip. If your pet carrier does not meet JetBlue’s pet policy guidelines, you can buy a pet carrier from JetBlue’s airport counter for around USD 50.

  • Restrictions
    • Route Restrictions
      • Pets are not accepted on flights to Barbados, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and St Lucia. 
      • Pets will not be accepted on flights to St. Maarten transiting through the U.S. from Central and South America.
      • Pets are not allowed on flights to/from London.
    • Number Restrictions 
      • Only 1 pet carrier per passenger is permitted (but exceptions can be made).
      • More than 4 pets will not be accepted on any flight.
      • The 4th pet can only be booked at the airport counter within 24 hours of departure.
    • Flight Restrictions
      • Pets are not permitted on interline bookings.
    • Seating Restrictions
      Passengers traveling with pets are not allowed to occupy:
      • Emergency exit row seats
      • Bulkhead seats
      • Mint seats 
      • Seats without adequate space underneath

JetBlue Pet Travel Guidelines

Before Traveling 

  • Before traveling, you must obtain the following:
    • Your pet’s vaccination and documentation (as required by the destination state/country).
    • Pet tags and veterinary certificate.  
  • A carrier cannot contain more than 1 pet. 
  • If traveling internationally, check IATA’s online database

At the Airport

  • You must check in your pet at the airport’s Full-Service counter.  
  • Your pet must remain zipped or closed inside its carrier at the airport. 
  • Ensure that your pet relieves itself only at the designated areas of these domestic airports.
    (JetBlue also offers waste bag dispensers for purchase).

TSA Pet Screening Security 

  • You will need to present your pet at the security checkpoint.
  • Your pet’s carrier will need to pass through the X-ray machine, but not your pet.
  • You will be asked to pass through a metal detector while holding your pet. If this can’t be done, your pet will have to go through a secondary screening, incl. a physical and visual inspection. 

In-Flight 

  • Window or aisle seats are highly recommended. 
  • Your pet must remain inside its carrier throughout the flight. 
  • You’re allowed to hold the carrier on your lap during the flight. However, it must be kept under the seat during taxi, take-off, and landing.  
  • You can purchase an extra seat for your pet and place the carrier on the extra seat, but the pet must remain inside the carrier. 

JetBlue Checked Baggage Pet Policy 

JetBlue does not provide checked baggage service for live pets.

JetBlue does not provide air cargo service for live pets. 

How to Cancel Pet Reservation on JetBlue

The pet fee is non-refundable, but it can be canceled and utilized later. 

To cancel your pet’s reservation, call 1-800-JETBLUE (538-2583) before the scheduled departure time. If you don’t, the fee will be forfeited. After you cancel, the fee will be converted to an air-only credit which you can apply toward future travel within 1 year of the issuance date. 

How to Travel with a Service Animal on JetBlue

According to JetBlue’s pet policy, a service animal is a dog that has been trained to help people with disabilities (physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, or psychiatric) so that they can act with greater independence. Service dogs are allowed to travel free of cost in the aircraft cabin with their owner—subject to the conditions below: 

  • Only trained service dogs will be accepted (under-training dogs will not be accepted).
  • Service dogs can travel free of charge in the cabin (incl. Mint).
  • A passenger can travel with up to 2 service dogs.
  • Documentation 
  • The required documentation (per service dog) must be submitted at least 48 hours before departure.

Note

  • U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico require vaccination documentation. 
  • For international vaccination and documentation requirements, read the USDA – APHIS Pet Travel requirements.
  • Must be under the handler’s control at all times—as well as leashed, harnessed, or otherwise tethered. 
  • Must be found to be well-behaved after being assessed at the airport. 
  • If traveling with a large service dog or 2 service dogs: 
  • You may have to purchase an additional seat(s) or wait for a flight with enough vacant seats available.
  • The service dog(s) must fit within the seat’s/seats’ foot space. 
  • No service dog is allowed to occupy a seat. It must stay on the floor at all times unless it is small enough to sit on the owner’s lap without touching any part of the seat, tray, or another passenger.
  • Assistance to/from the animal relief area is available on request from a JetBlue crew member. 
  • You must comply with the health and sanitation requirements of the airline, especially if your dog needs to relieve itself.
  • Your dog must not obstruct the aisle section or any other area.

Emotional Support Animals 

Emotional support animals (ESA) will no longer be accepted free of charge. However, they may travel for a fee if they meet all the requirements of JetBlue’s pet travel policy.
