Get all the information you need about Lufthansa’s baggage policy, allowance, fees, and restrictions.

Per the Lufthansa baggage policy, a passenger’s free baggage allowance (i.e., the number of free bags you’re allowed to carry and their weight) will depend on the route, booking class, and membership status. Also, Lufthansa’s baggage allowance is different for European and non-European routes. 

Major highlights of the Lufthansa baggage policy are as follows:

  1. The checked baggage allowance for non-European fares is: 
    • Economy 1 bag x 50lb/23kg 
    • Premium Economy 2 bags x 50lb/23kg 
    • Business 2 bags x 70lb/32kg 
    • First 3 bags x 70lb/32kg 
    • Lap infants (under 2) 1 bag x 50lb/23kg + 1 car seat + 1 stroller
  2. The checked baggage allowance for European fares is: 
    • Economy Light 0 bags 
    • Economy Classic 1 bag x 50lb/23kg 
    • Economy Flex 1 bag x 50lb/23kg 
    • Business 2 bags x 70lb/32kg each
    • Lap infants (under 2) 1 car seat + stroller/carrycot seat
      First baggage piece: USD 16 per direction
      Additional pieces: per paid excess baggage fee
  1. A standard checked bag can be up to 158cm/62in (Length + Width + Height) in size and 70lb/32kg in weight. Bags exceeding 50lb/23kg (Economy and Premium Economy) will incur overweight charges. Bags exceeding 292cm/115in (L + W + H) in size and 70lb/32kg will not be accepted. 
  2. Carry-on bags must fit under your front seat or in the overhead bin and can measure up to:
    • Standard Bag 55 x 40 x 23cm per bag, or 
    • Foldable Garment Bag 57 x 54 x 15cm per bag
    • Personal Item 30 x 40 x 10cm per item
  1. Economy and Premium Economy Class passengers are permitted 1 carry-on and Business and First Class passengers are permitted 2 carry-on bags. The maximum weight of your carry-on bag should not be more than 17.6lb/8kg per bag.
  2. If using, you can carry the following items free of charge:
    • Assistive devices like wheelchairs, braces, crutches, etc.
    • Child restraint systems and strollers
      (also, you can check in as many mobility aids as you might need)
  3. Miles & More and Star Alliance Gold members are entitled to additional free baggage. 
  4. Lufthansa baggage fees apply for each trip, meaning that you’ll have to pay twice the baggage fee for a round trip.

According to the Lufthansa baggage policy, your carry-on baggage allowance will be based on your travel class. You can carry 1 personal item and 1 or 2 carry-on bags free of charge (1 for Economy and Premium Economy, and 2 for Business and First)—subject to size and weight restrictions.

Lufthansa Carry-on Baggage Allowance—All Fares and Routes

According to the Lufthansa baggage policy, the carry-on baggage allowance for both European and non-European fares is the same. 

Passengers travelling on Business and First Class fares are permitted to carry 2 carry-on baggage items on board. Passengers travelling on Economy Class fares are permitted to carry only 1 piece of carry-on hand baggage with them.

Lufthansa Baggage Policy—Liquids and Powders 

The Lufthansa baggage policy for the carriage of liquids and powders is as follows:

  • Liquids, gels, and aerosols must be placed in transparent quart-sized bags in a carry-on bag, with no single item exceeding 100ml (3.4oz). However, larger containers (incl. hairsprays and insect repellents) can be packed in checked bags. 
  • Powdered substances such as coffee, milk powder, spices, etc., should not be more than 12oz in your carry-on bags if travelling internationally. However, larger quantities may be permitted in your checked bag after screening. 

The liquids and powders below are always permitted in your hand baggage:

  • Baby foods for the flight
  • Medicines accompanied by prescriptions
  • Special dietary foods for the flight 
  • Ashes (in urns) belonging to a deceased person 
  • Tax-free items (sealed)

Lufthansa Baggage Allowance for Children

Under the Lufthansa baggage policy, children travelling on their own tickets are allowed the same carry-on and checked baggage allowance as adults—plus a child car seat and a collapsible buggy (if between 2 – 7 years old). 

Lufthansa Baggage Allowance for Lap Infants

Under the Lufthansa baggage policy, the baggage allowance for lap infants (i.e., children below 2 years of age traveling on a passenger’s lap) on non-European flights is as follows:

  • 1 checked bag
    • Max. Weight 50lb/23kg 
    • Max. Size 158cm/62in (L + W + H)
  • No carry-on baggage 
  • 1 stroller/folding buggy/baby carrier (as free checked baggage)
  • 1 children’s car seat (only if a separate seat has been booked for the lap infant)

However, this does not apply to Economy Light fares on European flights. On European flights, the accompanying adult can add 1 piece of baggage for a fee of USD 16 per direction. Additional baggage pieces must be checked in as excess baggage. However, 1 foldable pushchair/buggy/baby basket can be carried free of charge. A child seat can be carried free of charge only if the child is using a seat on board.

Lufthansa Additional/Excess Baggage Fees

According to the Lufthansa baggage policy, additional, larger, and heavier bags will be charged an extra fee, depending on the route and travel class. 

For Economy and Premium Economy Class

Note

  • The rates may be different on routes to/from the USA or Canada.
  • The currency to calculate the entire itinerary’s cost will be the one that applies to the bag drop-off location. The conversion into local currency will be made later, where appropriate.
  • If your stopover exceeds 24 hours or the destination and/or origin airport is not the same in both directions, the farthest locations on the entire route will be charged.
  • Central America includes the following countries: Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Belize.
  • A higher fee will be charged for additional luggage pieces that are oversized and overweight. 
  • If the excess baggage is overweight and oversized, you will be charged e for the excess baggage—plus the applicable oversize or overweight charge.
  • Bags weighing more than 70lb/32kg will be shipped as air cargo. 

Lufthansa Baggage Policy for Sports Bags

Per the Lufthansa baggage policy for sports bags:

  • You can carry the first snowboarding/ski equipmentfree of charge in addition to your free baggage allowance, provided it does not exceed 200cm in length. However:
    • This does not apply to flights to/from the U.S., Central America, (Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Belize) and Mexico, or on Economy Class Light fares
    • The maximum weight must be within the free baggage limits of your travel class. 
  • The standard fee per additional piece will be charged for the sports equipment listed below, except on flights to/from Japan (USD 150/EUR 100):
    • The first piece of ski/snowboarding equipment on flights from/to the United States and Mexico. 
    • An additional piece of ski/water ski/snowboarding equipment, bicycle, golf equipment, fishing equipment, and shortboards not exceeding 200cm in length.
  • Sports bags containing bulky sports equipment will incur higher fees, depending on your route. This applies to windsurfing equipment, longboards between 200–315cm long, pole vaulting equipment, horse riding gear, rubber dinghies, boats, hang glider, and tandem bicycles.

According to Lufthansa’s baggage rules, the following sports equipment will be treated as standard sports equipment. The baggage rules that apply to standard sporting equipment are as follows:

According to Lufthansa’s baggage policy for medical devices, passengers requiring the use of Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) during the flight must meet the following conditions:

  • Traveling with a POC requires a physician’s statement.

  • Non-spillable batteries are permitted.

Lost or Delayed Baggage on Lufthansa

If your baggage does not arrive, you must keep all your documents—such as your boarding pass and the baggage tag. Be sure to wait until all bags have been delivered at the baggage reclaim area (typically takes 1 hour). If your bag still cannot be found, you must immediately report this: In-person at Lufthansa’s Baggage Tracing Desk in the airport, or Online.

After you report your lost or delayed baggage:

  • You will receive a written confirmation and a reference number (PIR number), such as FRALH77246.
  • You will receive regular updates regarding the status of your baggage. 
  • You can track your baggage status online
  • If your missing baggage cannot be found after 5 days of your reporting it, you will need to provide a detailed description of your bag, incl. the contents. You can do this by filling out the baggage status page which will be automatically accessible to you 5 days after you’ve reported your delayed baggage.
  • Your bag will be deemed lost if it is missing for at least 21 days.
  • Lufthansa will refund the baggage fees paid by you at check-in if your baggage is delayed, damaged, or lost.
  • Lufthansa’s liability per passenger for delayed, lost, or damaged baggage is limited to 1,288 Special Drawing Rights per passenger for most international flights.

How to Check the Status of Missing Baggage on Lufthansa

To check the status of your missing baggage: 

  • Go online and search for it by entering your PIR number. You can also change your contact details, such as delivery address or phone number. 
  • Call the phone number provided on the written confirmation receipt of your missing baggage report. 

Note

  • Most baggage items are found within 24 hours. When found, you will be contacted, and a suitable delivery time will be set up. 
  • If your baggage cannot be found within 5 days:
    • You will receive a call from Lufthansa 
    • You will be asked to provide a detailed list of the delayed baggage contents 

Damaged Baggage 

If your checked baggage was damaged upon arrival, you must: 

  • Report it immediately in person to:

Dangerous Goods that Can be Transported under Certain Conditions 

  • E-cigarettes and vaporizing devices powered by lithium batteries are only permitted in carry-on bags but cannot be used onboard.
  • Portable medical electronic devices, such as an AED, a CPAP machine, a ventilator, and an inhaler containing lithium-ion or lithium-metal cells/batteries are allowed as checked or carry-on baggage, subject to rules.
  • Portable electronic devices using lithium-ion batteries, such as laptops, mobile phones, cameras, watches, calculators, etc. can be taken as carry-on baggage or checked baggage without the carrier’s permission under certain conditions, incl.:
    • Up to 100Wh or 2g
      (carrier’s permission required if 100-160Wh or 2-8g)
    • The device is switched off
    • The device is protected from damage

    • The batteries must be disconnected and the terminals insulated to prevent the batteries from getting activated.

  • Portable oxygen concentrators can be taken as carry-on baggage for medical use through batteries and also used onboard. Lufthansa’s approval is required, however, and can be taken by email from specialservice@dlh.de.   • Pacemakers such as radio-isotopic and other devices like lithium battery-powered implanted devices can be taken as carry-on baggage (but not as checked baggage) without the carrier’s approval.
  • Heat-generating items, i.e., battery-operated devices like diving lamps, underwater torches, and soldering equipment capable of generating extreme heat and causing fire if activated accidentally can be taken only as carry-on baggage, and not as checked baggage.
    • The equipment should be turned off.
    • The energy source should be removed as well as packed separately.
