Thai Airways Baggage Policy

The Thai Airways baggage policy operates by the weight system/concept for domestic and select international routes (except U.S./Canada), with no restrictions on the number of pieces you can carry. On international flights to/from the U.S./Canada, the baggage policy works on the piece system/concept. 

Below is an overview of the Thai Airways baggage policy and allowance:

  • The free carry-on baggage allowance is:
    • 1 standard carry-on bag (22in x 18in x 10in and 7kg), plus
    • 1 personal item (15in x 10in x 5in and 1.5kg)
  • The free checked baggage allowance for domestic flights within Thailand (based on the weight system/concept) is given below. On weight concept flights, there’s no restriction on the number or size of bags, as long as the maximum weight is not exceeded.
    • 88lb/40kg for Royal Silk
    • 66lb/30kg for Premium Economy
    • 66lb/30kg for Economy
      (but 44lb/20kg for ticket codes L/V/W)
    • 22lb/10kg for a lap infant

Frequent Flyers are entitled to a free additional baggage allowance, as shown below.

  • ROP Silver status members can bring an extra 22lb/10kg
  • ROP/Star Alliance Gold status members can bring an extra 44lb/20kg

  • Bag Drop: If you’ve already checked in for your flight (online, with the mobile app, or kiosk) and received your boarding pass/receipt, you can leave your baggage at dedicated Bag Drop counters at all airports. 
  • Bangkok International Airport’s Bag Drop counters are located in Row C for domestic flights and Rows H-J for international flights. You can drop your baggage yourself at the Self Bag Drop counters D1 and D2 after printing your baggage tags from a service kiosk (open from 4.30 am to 11.30 pm daily.

You can purchase extra baggage on Thai Airways online, by phone, through your travel agent, or at the airport (costliest). If you purchase extra baggage at least 24 hours in advance online or by phone—available in slabs of 2.27lb/5kg—you can get a discount of 20-35%. Thai Airways Special Baggage Policy for U.S.A./Canada

According to the Thai Airways baggage policy, the following items will incur a special handling fee depending on your travel itinerary. If you’re travelling with the special baggage or sporting equipment below, you must contact Thai Airways at least 48 hours before departure to insert the baggage details into your booking. 

  • Bicycles
    • You can include a bicycle as part of your free/complimentary baggage allowance. 
    • If the bicycle is above your free/complimentary baggage allowance, a special unit price/flat rate of USD 150/unit will be charged.
  • Golf Equipment

Thai Airways Baggage Policy for Sports Equipment

The Thai Airways baggage policy allows you to carry most sports equipment as part of your free/complimentary baggage allowance. 

  • Surfboards and windsurfing equipment cannot be included in your free/complimentary baggage allowance, unless you’re travelling to/from New Zealand or Australia, or to/from Denpasar Bali (DPS) if you purchased your ticket in Japan.

Thai Airways Baggage Policy for Musical Instruments 

The Thai Airways baggage policy for musical instruments allows you to carry a single musical instrument as part of your complimentary baggage allowance if it is up to 100cm/39in in length. If the length of the musical instrument exceeds 100cm/39in, it will incur a special unit rate/flat price of: 

  • USD 150 per unit for:
    • Flights to/from U.S.A./Canada 
    • Flights between TC2 (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and TC3 (Australia, New Zealand, Asia) countries

Delayed, Lost, and Damaged Baggage 

If your baggage does not arrive or arrives damaged, you must notify the Thai Baggage Service Office immediately at the airport. After filing your report, you will be issued a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and a file reference number which you will need to track your baggage and claim reimbursement of expenses or compensation in case your baggage is damaged or missing.

  • The deadline for filing a claim for damaged checked baggage is within 7 days of receiving your baggage. 
  • The deadline for filing a claim for delayed checked baggage is within 21 days from the day it should have arrived. 

Thai Airways Baggage Claim

If your baggage is delayed, damaged, or lost, you must immediately contact the Thai Airways Baggage Service Office at the airport (near the baggage claims area). After you file a report (Property Irregularity Report, PIR), you will be issued a file reference number that you must save to track your baggage or make a claim if required.      

After filing your report, you can track your baggage by phone (at the number provided on the report) or online. You can also claim reimbursement for reasonable expenses incurred on necessities such as toiletries and clothing items due to delay in receiving your baggage (subject to original receipts) or to claim compensation if your bag is lost.
