Aer Lingus Baggage Allowance Policy & Fees

The Aer Lingus baggage policy offers you a lot of flexibility for purchasing weights. The baggage fees can be up to 50% cheaper if you purchase your allowance online at the time of booking your flight. Baggage rules for carry-on bags on routes within Europe have been revised and will apply from June 29, 2021, regardless of when you booked your ticket.

What is the baggage allowance on Aer Lingus?

• Your carry-on baggage allowance* on Aer Lingus is as follows:
  • 1 carry -on bag:
    • Not exceeding 22lb/10kg or 55cm x 40cm x 24cm on Aer Lingus.
    • Not exceeding 15lb/7kg or 48cm x 33cm x 20cm on Aer Lingus Regional. 
  • 1 personal item not exceeding 25cm x 33cm x 20cm on Aer Lingus, such as a laptop, duty-free bag, small handbag, etc. 

Lap infants (below 2 years) are not entitled to any carry-on baggage allowance. 

*To bring your carry-on bag on board after June 29, 2021 (on routes within Europe), you must purchase the Carry-on bag with priority boarding option; otherwise, you can drop it off at check-in for free. If you don’t purchase the option and bring your carry-on bag to the gate, you’ll be charged a baggage fee of €35 and your bag will be placed in the aircraft hold.

• Your checked baggage allowance on Aer Lingus will depend on your fare type and destination.
  • On flights within Europe, the checked baggage allowance is:
    • Nil for Saver fares (must be purchased).
    • 44lb/20kg for Plus, Advantage, and AerSpace fares. 
    • 1 fully collapsible stroller/buggy plus a travel cot/booster seat/car seat for lap infants.
  • On transatlantic flights, the checked baggage allowance is:
    • Nil for Saver fares (must be purchased).
    • 1 bag x 50lb/23kg for Economy Smart/Flex fares.
    • 3 bags x 50lb/23kg each for Business/Business Flex fares.
    • 22lb/10kg and 1 fully collapsible stroller/buggy free of cost plus a travel cot/booster seat/car seat for lap infants.
  • The combined dimensions (L + W + H) of a single checked bag must not exceed 158cm (62in), and the maximum weight of a single bag must not exceed 70lb/32kg. 
    
• Passengers traveling on the same booking and checking in together are allowed to pool their baggage allowance. 
• If you purchased your ticket through a travel agent, ask them for your baggage allowance.

Aer Lingus Cabin Baggage Allowance

The Aer Lingus cabin baggage policy offers the same cabin baggage/carry-on baggage allowance for all passengers, although the mode of carriage has been slightly revised for routes within Europe. 

Passengers are entitled to a cabin baggage allowance of:

1. 1 carry-on bag/cabin bag
   1. On Aer Lingus, the cabin baggage dimensions must not exceed 55cm x 40cm x 24cm and the maximum weight must not exceed 22lb/10kg. 
   2. On Aer Lingus Regional, the cabin baggage dimensions must not exceed 48cm x 33cm x 20cm and the maximum weight must not exceed 15lb/7kg. 
2. 1 personal item
   1. On Aer Lingus, the baggage dimensions of the personal item must not exceed 25cm x 33cm x 20cm. Personal items can include a small handbag, laptop, a duty-free bag, etc. 
   2. On Aer Lingus Regional, passengers are not allowed to carry a personal item. 

Aer Lingus cabin baggage policy update (June 29, 2021). Cabin baggage policy has recently been revised only for passengers flying within Europe, but not for passengers flying on transatlantic routes. The new cabin baggage policy (effective from June 29, 2021) does not affect your cabin baggage allowance of 1 carry-on bag (22lb/10kg) and 1 personal item—it still remains the same as earlier (see below). 

However, the revised cabin baggage policy now offers 2 options for your 22lb/10kg carry-on bag on flights within Europe:

Option 1. You can bring your 22lb carry-on bag on board only if you purchase a Carry-on bag with priority boarding option or if you have it included in your booking. This option is currently included for the following passengers/members (so they don’t need to purchase it): 

1. AerClub Silver, Platinum, Concierge members (but not their travelling companions). 
2. Passengers travelling on Plus, Advantage and Aer Space fares.
3. Adult passengers travelling with infants. 
4. Passengers connecting to/from a transatlantic Aer Lingus flight or a connecting flight with an interline partner’s flight.
   

Option 2. If you don’t purchase the Carry-on bag with priority boarding option, you can still travel with the 22lb/10 kg bag, but you must drop it off at check-in at no additional fee. If you don’t purchase the option and bring your bag to the gate, you’ll be charged a fee of €35 and your bag will be placed in the aircraft hold. 

Aer Lingus Carry-on Baggage Rules 

• When taking a connecting flight from Lingus to Aer Lingus Regional, the reduced (15lb/7kg) carry-on allowance for Aer Lingus Regional will apply for both flights.
• All passengers must be able to place their carry-on bag in the overhead bin without assistance. 
• Your carry-on baggage may have to be placed in the hold:
  • On occasion due to space limitations. 
  • If it exceeds the permitted weight and/or size.
• The smaller bag should be stowed under the front seat and the larger bag in the overhead bin.
• Passengers seated in the first row (Economy or Business) or at an emergency exit must store their baggage in the overhead bin. 
• Your carry-on baggage allowance may differ if your journey is partly with another airline. 
• Your carry-on baggage must comply with the regulations for LAGs (liquids, aerosols, and gels) and TSA rules if your flight is departing from the United States. 
• Lap infants are not allowed any carry-on baggage allowance. 
• Assistive or medical devices such as a wheelchair, crutches, cane, walker, etc., do not count toward your cabin baggage allowance. This means you can carry them free of charge.

Aer Lingus Checked Baggage Allowance 

What is the Aer Lingus checked baggage allowance and policy?

1. On routes within Europe, the checked baggage allowance:
   1. For passengers travelling on Saver fares is nil—it must be purchased.
   2. For Plus, Advantage, and AerSpace fares is 44lb/20kg per passenger (you can purchase additional baggage by weight).
   3. For infants is 1 fully collapsible stroller/buggy plus a travel cot/booster seat/car seat.
2. On transatlantic routes, the checked baggage allowance:
   1. For Saver fares is nil—it must be purchased.
   2. For Economy Smart/Flex fares 1 bag of up to 50lb/23kg.
   3. For Business/Business Flex fares is 3 bags of up to 50lb/23kg each. 
   4. For infants (children below 2 years) is 22lb/10kg plus 1 fully collapsible stroller/buggy plus a travel cot/booster seat/car seat.

• Purchasing bags online is up to 50% cheaper than purchasing at the airport. 
• The size of a checked bag must not exceed 158cm (62in) in combined dimensions and the weight must not exceed 70lb/32kg.  
• Passengers are allowed to pool their baggage allowance if they’re travelling on the same booking and checking in together. 
• You can book your bags at discounted rates online up to 2 hours before your flight’s departure—at the time of booking your flight, later via Manage Trip, and during check-in. You can add bags online only if you book your ticket online via AerLingus.com. If you purchased your ticket from a travel agent, you must contact them directly to book your baggage.

Aer Lingus Baggage Fees—Weight Concept Flights (within Europe)

If you’re flying within Europe on an Economy Saver fare, Aer Lingus allows you 4 options to purchase baggage: 

1. A Small Bag option allows you to check in 1 bag weighing up to 33lb/15kg.
2. A Medium Bag option allows you to check in 1 bag weighing up to 44lb/20kg.
3. A Large Bag option allows you to check in 1 bag weighing up to 55lb/25kg.
4. An Extra-Large Bag option allows you to check in 2 bags weighing 88lb/40 together. 

The checked baggage charges (aside from weight) will also depend on:

• How you pay for your baggage (online, call center, airport). 
• When you pay (at the time of booking, after booking, during check-in).

Aer Lingus Baggage Fees—Piece Concept Routes (Transatlantic)

What are the checked baggage charges on Aer Lingus flights to North America? 

The checked baggage fees on transatlantic routes, i.e., flights to/from North America, work on a per-bag concept. 

• Saver fares do not include any baggage allowance—it must be purchased. 
• Smart and Flex fares include 1 checked bag of 50lb/23kg per passenger. 
• Business and Business Flex fares include 3 checked bags with a combined weight of 150lb/69kg per passenger.
• Excess baggage can be purchased using any of these 3 options: 

1. 44lb/20kg bag.
2. 55lb/25kg bag.
3. 66lb/30kg bag.

Aer Lingus Excess Baggage Charges

What are the excess baggage charges on Aer Lingus?

An excess baggage fee will apply to any bag in excess of your baggage allowance. The excess baggage charges on Aer Lingus will depend on your route, as shown below. 

• Excess baggage charges for flights within Europe. If you do not book your baggage in advance and reach the airport with bags to check, Aer Lingus will charge you for the first 44lb/20kg (per the rates mentioned above), and then at the rate of € 10/USD 11 per kg for every additional kilo. 
• Excess baggage charges for transatlantic flights. The excess baggage fee for flights to/from North America is € 75/USD 100 per bag for a 50-70lb/23-32kg bag.

You can pay your Aer Lingus baggage fees in any of these ways:

To purchase baggage online:

1. Go to AerLingus.com 
2. Retrieve your flight booking as follows:
   1. Click on Manage Trip 
   2. Enter your booking reference and family name 
   3. Click on the Manage Trip button 
3. Follow the prompts to add more baggage 
4. Pay

Note 

• You can also log in with your membership number to pre-purchase your baggage. 
• You can also pre-purchase baggage using the mobile app or the self-service kiosk at the airport. 
• It is cheaper to pre-purchase baggage online at least 24 hours before departure.

Aer Lingus Sporting Equipment Policy

The Aer Lingus sports baggage policy allows you to carry your sports equipment as checked baggage. 

General Guidelines 

• The normal weight limit for sporting equipment is 50lb/23kg—beyond this, normal excess baggage rates will apply (per passenger, per way).
• 1 piece of sports equipment is permitted per passenger.
• Passengers flying to/from North America can carry sports equipment as part of their standard baggage allowance. If the sports equipment exceeds this allowance, an excess baggage rate of €75/USD 100 will apply (per passenger, per way).
• Passengers traveling on European flights (i.e., all other flights) must pay a flat fee of:
  • €40 (~USD 48) if paying online 
  • €50 (~USD 60) if paying through the Reservations Office 
  • €50 if paying at the airport on the day of departure

This fee must be paid before departure—and applies per passenger/per way.

• For passengers traveling on Aer Lingus Regional flights, the carriage of sports equipment is subject to space availability on the day of travel.
• Business Class passengers can carry sports equipment free of charge.
• If traveling in a group with sports equipment, contact Aer Lingus in advance to ensure space availability. 
• All sports equipment must be packed properly and comply with the weight and size restrictions. 

Aer Lingus Sports Equipment Guidelines

Below are a few tips on how to pack your sports equipment, along with the weight, size, and restrictions that apply to them.

• Golf Bags
  • Only permitted as a checked baggage item. 
  • Includes 1 golf bag with golf clubs and other golfing equipment.
  • 1 golf bag is permitted per passenger.
  • The airline will accept soft-sided bags, but not take responsibility for any damage.
  • The following restrictions apply:
    • If traveling on Aer Lingus Regional, the maximum number of golf bags accepted on the aircraft will depend on the type of aircraft. 
    • The maximum limit per flight is:
      • ATR42—6 
      • ATR72—12 
  • If traveling in a group with golf equipment, contact Aer Lingus in advance. 
• Bicycles 
  • Only permitted as a checked baggage item. 
  • Must reserve space as follows:
    • Submit the Upcoming Travel Enquiry form
  • Fees can be prepaid by phone only.
  • A maximum of 10 bicycles will be accepted per Aer Lingus flight, except at these airports where only 6 bicycles will be accepted per flight due to high volumes of cargo:
    Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Zurich, Frankfurt, Prague, Lisbon, and Vienna.
  • Aer Lingus Regional flights will only accept 1 bicycle per flight, subject to space availability on the day of departure.
  • A per-way fee of €50 (or its equivalent) will be charged for carrying a bicycle. The fee can be paid through the Reservations Office or at the airport on the day of travel. 
  • How to pack 
    • Must be suitably packed to prevent damage. Ensure the tires are deflated, the pedals removed or inverted, the handlebars lowered and fixed sideways, and all sharp protruding parts protected with cardboard or plastic to prevent damage to other items. 
  • Checking in
    • Must check in at least 90 minutes before departure.
    • Bicycles with unconfirmed reservations will be subject to stand-by conditions.
    • Bicycles with confirmed reservations will be checked in automatically.
• Sport Guns 
  • Must reach the airport at least 3 hours before departure. 
  • Only licensed firearm owners are allowed to check in their equipment.
  • Must present the required licenses and documentation at check-in.
  • The following conditions will apply to sports guns and ammunition cartridges:
    • Sports guns must be dismantled and packed in a suitable case:
      • No more than 1 gun per case.
      • The case must be packed inside a checked bag.
      • Must be packed separately from other baggage.
    • Must be available for security inspection.
    • Ammunition (incl. packaging) must not exceed 11lb/5kg per passenger.
    • Must be packed in a wooden, metal, or fireboard container such that the contents are prevented from any movement.
    • Subject to extra fees for flights within Europe.
  • A fee of €50 will be charged per gun on all flights within Europe, payable on the day of travel at the airport.
  • Other restrictions
    • Sports guns, ammunition, and cartridges will not be accepted on Aer Lingus flights.
    • Transporting firearms and ammunition other than sporting weapons must be approved by the government. For details, contact the local embassy or consulate in your country.
• Diving Equipment
  • Only permitted as a checked baggage item. 
  • Must be packed in a proper bag without exceeding the weight and size restrictions.
  • Cylinders are not allowed. 
  • Pressure-sensitive devices must be securely packed per the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Fishing Equipment
  • Only permitted as a checked baggage item. 
  • The following items count as one checked item:
    1 fishing rod, tackle basket, and case. 
  • Only 1 piece per passenger is permitted. 
  • On Aer Lingus Regional flights, the maximum length of the fishing equipment must not exceed 205cm/69in.
  • Must be properly packed in a suitable container. 
• Surfboards
  • Only permitted as a checked baggage item. 
  • Must not exceed 277cm/110in in length.
    • Dublin Airport cannot accommodate surfboards longer than 240cm.
    • If departing from Dublin Airport with a surfboard between 240 and 277cm in length, check in at terminal 2 and bring the surfboard to terminal 1 for screening. 
  • Must be padded/cushioned such as in bubble wrapping to prevent accidental damage.
  • Aer Lingus Regional flights will not accept surfboards longer than 205cm/80in.
• Windsurfing Equipment
  • Only permitted as a checked baggage item. 
  • Cannot be booked online—contact or local reservations office.
  • Includes 1 board, 1 boom, and 1 sail per passenger.
  • No item must exceed 277cm/110in in length.
  • Must be properly packed to prevent damage.
  • Reach at least 90 minutes before departure.
• Skis
  • Only permitted as a checked baggage item. 
  • Includes 1 pair of skis, boots, and poles per passenger.
  • Can be booked online.
• Snowboards
  • Only permitted as a checked baggage item. 
  • Only 1 snowboard per passenger is allowed.
  • Can be booked online.
  • Must be packed properly.

The sports equipment fees for flights within Europe will depend on how you pay it—online or at the airport—and are given in the table below (if you’re traveling to/from the United States, sports equipment is part of your standard baggage allowance).

The requirements for each special item are briefly explained below.

1. Push-chairs/Strollers
   • The following items can be carried free of charge for a child or infant:
     • 1 push-chair, stroller, or collapsible buggy, and
     • 1 booster seat/travel cot/car seat 
   • If checking in, collect from the baggage belt upon arrival.
   • If handing over at the boarding gate, collect at the designated collection point upon arrival.

2. Miscellaneous Items 
   • You can travel with the following items without prior approval, subject to normal carry-on or checked baggage rules. However, you must pack them properly to prevent any damage:
     • Wedding cake
     • Wedding dress
     • Crystal
     • Toolboxes 
     • Power tools
       (must not use gasoline or flammable fuels)
3. Medical Equipment 
   • Must inform Aer Lingus at least 48 hours before departure.
   • Aer Lingus allows medical equipment such as FAA approved Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs) and medical devices such as nebulizers, C-PAPs, ventilators, and respirator machines. Non-approved devices can only be used if they bear a label stating that they comply with FAA requirements and can be used on board an aircraft. 
   • POCs and other medical devices can only be used in the Economy Class cabin for safety reasons—they are not allowed to be used in the Business Class cabin.
   • The use of defibrillators is prohibited on all Aer Lingus aircraft. 
   • Devices with inbuilt humidifiers or as standalone attachments are not allowed to be used on the aircraft.

• Onboard power sources are not provided for any medical devices. You must bring an adequate supply of batteries to run the devices during your trip.

4. Human Remains
   • Contact Cargo Reservations for assistance. 
5. Ashes
   • Passengers are allowed to carry ashes in an urn as part of their normal baggage allowance—both in their carry-on and checked bags. 
   • Must ensure that the urn is packed in a secure, leak-proof container. 
   • Must be a non-metal container as it will be made to pass through an x-ray machine. 
   • Must carry both death certificate and cremation certificate for the urn to be accepted.

Aer Lingus Musical Instruments Policy

Per Aer Lingus’s musical instruments policy, you can carry your musical instrument/equipment as part of your carry-on or checked baggage allowance—or purchase an extra seat to accommodate it. Below are a few things to remember:

• Musical instruments should be securely packed to prevent damage. 
• Large musical instruments must be checked in.
• High-value musical instruments should be insured before travel. 

1. Musical Instrument as Carry-on/Cabin Baggage 

You can bring a small musical instrument with your carry-on baggage without paying for it. It should, however, fit in the overhead bin or under your front seat (with the case)—and fall within these size limits: 

• Aer Lingus flights
  • Max. Length 24cm/9.5in
  • Max. Width 40cm/15.5in
  • Max. Height 55cm/21.5in

• Aer Lingus Regional flights
  • Max. Length 20cm/8in
  • Max. Width 33cm/13in
  • Max. Height 48cm/18.5in

In case of space limitations, you will need to carry your musical instrument as checked baggage. 

2. Musical Instrument on a Paid Seat 

You can carry larger musical instruments like a guitar, bass, cello, etc., by purchasing a window seat for it.

You can book your musical instrument on a paid seat by phone or online. If you’re booking by phone, call or your local Aer Lingus office and make a booking. 

• If you’re booking online:
  • Book under the passenger’s family name.
    Example: ‘DOE’
  • Enter the first name as ‘ONE’ followed by the instrument’s name.
    Example: ‘DOE/ONE CELLO MS’ or ‘DOE/ONE GUITAR MS’
    (MS refers to the salutation)
• Restrictions
  • Aer Lingus flights
    The max. weight and size of the musical instrument (incl. case) must not exceed:
    • Max. Weight 165lb/75kg
    • Max. Size
      • Length 41cm/16in 
      • Width 58cm/23cm
      • Height 94cm/37in
  • Aer Lingus Regional flights
    • Check in at the airport—not online.
    • Carry your musical instrument to the airport. 
    • The check-in agent will block the seat next to yours after determining the weight and size of your musical instrument.
• The seat must be paid for—your free baggage allowance will not be considered.  
• The packed musical instrument must be secured with a seatbelt on a window seat next to yours and must meet all the safety regulations. 
• The musical instrument must not block other passengers’ view of the aircraft’s cabin signage. 
• Reach the Are Lingus check-in counter with the packed musical instrument well in advance. 

3. Musical Instrument as Checked Baggage 

Musical instruments unsuited for carriage in the cabin due to their weight and/or size—such as drums, harps, double basses—must be checked in. However, you must pack the instrument securely to prevent damage. 

• On flights to/from North America, musical instruments can be carried as part of your standard baggage allowance. 
• On all other flights, a fee equal to the sports equipment fee will be charged. If you pay online, the fee is €40, and €50 if you pay via the Reservations Office or at the Airport. 

Aer Lingus Baggage Issues—Delayed, Missing, or Damaged Baggage

Delayed or missing baggage

If your checked baggage has been delayed or is missing, you must: 

1. Report it immediately at the airport to an Aer Lingus staff member and file a report. You will need to provide your 2-letter-6-number baggage tag number (such as EI12345) that you were given when you checked in. If you used the Express Bag Drop, you can find your baggage tag number here. After you submit the report, you will be given Baggage File Reference number which you will need to track your bag(s) or claim compensation. 
2. Report it immediately by phone (call the Baggage phone number)

How to track your baggage on Aer Lingus

Once you’ve filed a report, you can follow up on the status as follows: 

• Call the Baggage Office at your destination airport.
• Do it online via the Aer Lingus baggage tracing service. 

What to do if your Aer Lingus baggage is missing after 72 hours 

If you don’t receive your baggage after 72 hours: 

1. Fill out the delayed baggage questionnaire 
2. Submit it to central.baggage-tracing@aerlingus.com—no later than 21 days after you filed your report

Aer Lingus will use this form to locate your bag(s) and process any related compensation. 

Note: IATA (International Air Transport Association) recommends that you must file your missing baggage with the last airline flown. You must contact the last airline you flew on for issues relating to late delivery, damage, or missing baggage.

How to seek reimbursement claims 

To seek compensation of any nature, you must:

1. Inform Aer Lingus and submit your claim to the Aer Lingus Guest Relations Department by filling out the Post Travel Enquiry Form. The form must include:
   1. Your Baggage File Reference number 
   2. Interim expense details as indicated in the Comments section 
   3. Your baggage tags (as a single PDF attachment per form)
   4. Original receipts as proof of expenses incurred by you (if claiming expenses due to delayed baggage) 

Damaged baggage issues 

If you find your checked baggage damaged upon arrival, you must: 

1. Report the damage immediately at the airport’s information desk, or 
2. Report it by phone by calling the Baggage phone number.
3. Report it online by filling out the Post Travel Enquiry Form—but no later than 7 days of receiving your baggage.

After you file the report: 

• You will be given a Property Irregularity Report reference number.
• Your report will be reviewed and assessed.
• You will be informed of the next steps.

Note. If you don’t report the damage within 7 days of receiving your bag, you may not be compensated for any damages. 

Aer Lingus Baggage Liability – Lost and Damaged Bags 

If your baggage is damaged, lost, or delayed on Aer Lingus (other than a mobility aid, assistive device, or wheelchair), the maximum amount you can claim from the airline is SDR 1,131 (~USD 1,628) per ticketed passenger.

If you think that the contents of your checked are more valuable, you must declare a higher value for your bag, and pay an additional fee for it before you travel. If you meet all these conditions, you will be paid compensated based on the higher value declared by you.

Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels (LAGs) Restrictions

You’re allowed to carry liquids, aerosols, and gels in your carry-on baggage in 3.4oz/100ml containers. Examples include soups, beverages, water, drinks; creams, toothpaste, lotions, oils; perfumes; sprays; hair gels, shower gels, and items having similar consistency. You must you’re your LAGs in a clear plastic bag, and the volume of the plastic bag must not exceed 33.8oz (1L) per passenger. Be sure to completely seal the contents, and present them to for visual examination at security. 

Exemptions 

You’re allowed to carry the following items in your cabin baggage if you require them during the flight—but you must declare them at the checkpoint:

• Prescription medication in liquid, aerosol, or gel form 
• Baby foods that will consumed during the flight 

EU Regulations for LAGs

Per the latest EU regulations, all LAG items must be in a sealed plastic bag and be kept in a security tamper-evident bag, STEB. Passengers need to show their STEBs at security checkpoints, incl. LAGs purchased on the aircraft. For details, click here. 

You can carry powdered substances in your carry-on baggage, but within limits. They can include ground coffee, powdered milk, cosmetics, sugar, spices, flour, medication in powder form, baby food, sugar, etc. 

United States Regulations 

If you’re travelling to the United States, you’re allowed to bring up to 12oz/350ml of powdered substances in your carry-on baggage. If you’re carrying more than this quantity, you must check them in. However, the following items are allowed:

• Prescription medications in powdered form 
• Baby foods
• Duty-free powdered substances, only if packed in a security tamper-evident bag (STEB)
  

Aer Lingus Duty-free Purchases 

Duty-free items are subject to the same rules that apply to LAGs (liquids, aerosols, and gels). Passengers are not allowed to carry individual items exceeding 100ml (3oz). If traveling to an international destination, buy your duty-free items on your last flight segment so that you don’t have to pass through any more checkpoints.

Aer Lingus Checked & Hand Baggage Restrictions

In addition to the above-mentioned items, the Aer Lingus baggage policy prohibits the carriage of the following items either as hand baggage or as checked baggage:

• Items prohibited by rules, regulations, and laws in the countries in your travel itinerary. 
• Items stated as unsuitable by Aer Lingus due to limitations relating to their nature, volume, weight, or quantity.
• All live animals except cats, dogs, rabbits, and service dogs traveling in compliance with Aer Lingus pet travel requirements. 

Prohibited Items 

Per EU security regulations, the following items are not allowed on board the aircraft or into the restricted Security Area of any airport.

• Firearms, incl. guns and projectile-discharging devices capable of causing injury, such as:
  • Revolvers, pistols, shotguns, and rifles.
  • Imitation firearms incl. toy guns and replicas that could be mistaken for a real weapon. This does not include telescopic sights.
  • Compressed air guns and CO2 guns, incl. pellet guns, rifles, pistols, and BB guns.
  • Signal flare pistols and starter pistols. 
  • Bows, crossbows, and arrows.
  • Spearguns and harpoon guns. 
  • Catapults and slingshots.
• Stunning devices that can immobilize or stun, such as:
  • Shocking devices, such as tasers, stun guns, stun batons, etc.
  • Animal killers/stunners.
  • Incapacitating or disabling chemicals, sprays, and gases, incl. but not limited to pepper sprays, acid sprays, capsicum sprays, tear gas, and animal repellent sprays.
• Sharp-pointed/sharp-edged objects that can cause serious injury, such as:
  • Chopping objects, such as hatchets, cleavers, and axes. 
  • Ice picks/axes.
  • Box cutters, razor blades.
  • Knives with longer-than-6cm blades.
  • Scissors with longer-than-6cm blades.

  • Sharp martial arts equipment.
  • Sabers and swords.
• Workmen’s tools-tools capable of causing serious injury, such as:
  • Crowbars
  • Drills incl. portable power drills and drill bits.
  • Tools with a blade/shaft exceeding 6cm that can be used as a weapon, such as chisels, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Saws incl. portable power saws.
  • Blowtorches, nail guns, bolt guns, etc.
  • bolt guns and nail guns;
• Blunt instruments capable of causing serious injury, such as:
  • Baseball bats, softball bats, etc.
  • Batons and clubs, incl. blackjacks, nightsticks, Billy clubs, etc. 
  • Martial arts tools.
• Explosives and incendiary materials and devices, such as:
  • Smoke canisters and cartridges. 
  • Imitation and explosive devices.
  • Grenades, mines, and explosive military items.
  • Pyrotechnics and other fireworks.
  • Gunpowder, dynamite, and plastic explosives.
  • Fuses and detonators.
  • Blasting caps and ammunition.
• Segways and similar devices are not allowed on board as cabin or checked bags. They include hoverboards, mini Segways, hoverboards, etc. 
• Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphone devices are prohibited on board aircraft in the United States and Canada and cannot be carried as carry-on or checked baggage.

Aer Lingus Checked Baggage Restrictions 

The following items cannot be carried inside checked bags:

• Smoke canisters and cartridges, gunpowder, dynamite, and plastic explosives. 
• Grenades, mines, and other military explosive items.
• Pyrotechnics and fireworks.
• Incendiary items and explosives, such as fuses and detonators, ammunition, blasting caps, etc.

Prohibited items on Aer Lingus Regional Flights

The dangerous item listed below are not allowed as cabin or checked baggage on all Aer Lingus flights—in addition to the restrictions listed above.

• Firearms, guns, and weapons incl. their replicas.
• Sharp, pointed, or edged objects with a longer-than-6cm blade. 
• Refrigerated/flammable/non-flammable/poisonous gases such as oxygen, butane, aqualung cylinders, liquid nitrogen, and compressed gas cylinders. 
• Items powered by internal combustion engines—such as lawnmowers, model aircraft, and chainsaws.
• Corrosive substances such as alkalis, acids, and wet cell batteries. 
• Mercury-containing items.
• Munitions and explosives, incl. handguns, shotguns, blank cartridges, Christmas crackers, fireworks, pistol caps, and flares.
• Flammable solids and liquids, matches (except safety matches carried in-person), radioactive materials, paints, thinners, firelighters, lighter fuel, and lighters requiring inversion before ignition. 
• Organic peroxide and oxidizing materials incl. bleaching powder.
• Toxic materials, poisonous chemicals, and infectious items incl. weed killers, live viruses, etc.
• Medicinal and commercial isotopes.
• Magnetized articles, irritating and offensive materials

Items permitted on Aer Lingus Regional Flights as Checked Baggage 

The items listed below will not be allowed as carry-ons but can be checked in if packed properly.

• Tradesmen’s tools.
• Skis, walking, and hiking poles.
• Scissors and razor blades incl. open-bladed razors.
• Large clubs and sporting bats.
• Knitting needles.
• Hypodermic syringes.
• Darts, cutlery, and knives with less-than-6cm blades.
• Catapults.
• Snooker, pool, or billiard cues.
• Similar articles that aren’t allowed as cabin baggage.

Note. Sharp objects must be securely packed to prevent injury or damage. 

Restricted Items Requiring Advance Notification 

The following restricted items require advance notification of at least 48 hours:

• Battery-operated mobility aids:
  • Lithium/spillable batteries.
  • Collapsible lithium-ion batteries.
  • Non-spillable batteries.
• Fuel containers and camping stoves.
  (must be empty). 
• If carrying lithium-ion batteries with a 100-160Wh rating:
  • Must be packed securely. 
  • Up to 2 spare batteries are allowed per passenger. 
• Articles containing mercury, such as thermometers and barometers.
• If carrying an avalanche rescue backpack, be sure to pack it such that the pressure relief valves cannot be activated accidentally.
• Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide).
• Heat-generating articles such as soldering irons, diving lamps, etc.
• Small cylinders incl. an oxygen cylinder for medical use, must not weigh more than 11lb/5kg.
• Life jackets with small, non-flammable gas cylinders must contain a Division 2.2.gas.
• Portable medical electronic devices containing lithium-ion batteries, incl. nebulizers, CPAP machines, AEDs, etc. For details, refer to the section titled Special Assistance section.
• Monitoring equipment for chemical agents.
• If carrying a firearm and/or ammunition, it must be securely packed. For details, refer to Sports Guns under the section titled Guidelines for Carrying Sporting Equipment. Sports weapons, firearms, and ammunition are not allowed on Aer Lingus Regional flights.

Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) and Spare Batteries

• Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) like a laptop, cellphone, drone, watch, calculator, etc. when carried in checked bags must be completely switched off (sleep/hibernation mode is not permitted) to prevent accidental activation. 
• No passenger can carry more than 15 PEDs and/or 20 spare batteries with an up-to-100Wh rating. If carrying more, you must seek advance approval from Aer Lingus. 
• Spare Batteries and Power Banks can be taken only in carry-on bags and not in checked bags. They must be packed individually, with the terminals taped (or placed in a plastic bag) to protect short-circuiting. The lithium metal content of lithium metal batteries must not exceed 2 grams, and the watt-hour (Wh) rating of lithium-ion batteries must not exceed 100Wh. Power Banks must be marked with specs and values, or they will not be accepted. 
• No more than two 100 – 160Wh spare lithium batteries (incl. portable battery supply device and power bank) can be carried by any passenger as carry-on baggage—subject to Aer Lingus’s approval. Lithium-ion batteries exceeding 160Wh are prohibited. Additionally, the batteries must comply with the requirements of the tests indicated in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3. If traveling with a battery-powered wheelchair or mobility aid, refer to Special Assistance and Inquiry for details.

• Portable hand-held fans using in-built lithium-ion batteries can only be taken in a carry-on bag or in-person—but never in a checked bag.
• Products containing/powered by lead-acid batteries—such as LED flashlights and rechargeable mosquito zappers—will most likely be rejected on inspection. However, if you’re carrying a medical device or mobility aid powered by a lead-acid battery, get it pre-approved by Aer Lingus Reservations before your travel date to avoid last-minute hassles. 

Smart Baggage

Smart baggage is a bag containing lithium batteries to operate the bag and includes power banks for recharging personal electronic devices (PEDs) such as cellphones, laptops, and tablets. 

The following types of smart baggage will not be accepted:

• If the power bank or lithium battery cannot be easily removed. 
• If the watt-hour rating of the power bank/lithium battery exceeds 100Wh. 
• If the watt-hour rating cannot be known. 

If the power bank or lithium battery can be removed:

• It must be removed and carried as a carry-on item in the cabin after protecting the terminals against short-circuiting. 
• The watt-hour rating must not exceed 100Wh.

Loose Batteries 

If you’re traveling with loose batteries, you must protect them from contact with metal items—either by packing them in a protective case or letting them remain in their original retail packaging—and carrying them in your handbag. 

However, if you’re carrying devices with properly installed batteries, you can pack them in your checked baggage. 

Note: Segways are not allowed either as cabin or checked baggage. 

Lighters and matches

If traveling to/from/via the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) permits you to carry common lighters in your carry-on bag/hand baggage. However, torch lighters cannot be taken as carry-on items. On other flights, you must carry them on your person.
